Edwards, Heuss, Beaber win but Robin wrestlers fall at Shawano

The Antigo High School wrestling team opened it's season on the road Thursday evening, traveling for a dual meet with the Shawano Community Hawks and returning on the short end of a 49-21 final score.

Logan Edwards secured the first win of the season for the Red Robins, defeating Hayden Stange in the 138 pound class. Edwards was able to score a takedown in the first period, then a two-point near fall for a 4-0 lead. In the second period, Edwards scored another takedown and near fall in the second period before finishing with a pin at 2:47.

Josh Heuss was another winner for Antigo, taking down Andrew Popp by pinfall at 160 pounds. In an exciting first period, Heuss recorded an early takedown, but Popp was able to escape and a takedown of his own, followed by a reversal from Heuss and a 4-3 Antigo lead. Heuss was able to earn the victory with a turn and pinfall at 2:59.

Seth Beaber earned another Robin win in lengthy 120 pound match against Connor Majeski. Beaber started with a takedown, then after a locked hands call and escape, the first period ended in a 2-2 tie. The second period saw two takedowns by each grappler, two escapes by Majeski, and a locked hands call on Majeski, ending with a 6-5 Shawano advantage.

The third period would belong to Beaber, who started in the bottom position and secured a reversal and a two-point near fall to take the lead. Beaber than finished the match with a cradle for a three-point near fall and a 12-6 victory.

Jaden Schoeneck also earned a win for Antigo via forfeit in the 132 pound division.

The most anticipated match of the evening came in the 220 pound class, with Antigo senior Nick Roller taking on Keith Tourtillott, who qualified for the state tournament last season with a 33-6 record.

Tourtillott started the scoring with a first period takedown, but Roller was able to secure an escape and end the period down just 2-1. Roller chose to start in the bottom position to start the second, and accomplished another escape, but Tourtillott scored a takedown to end the second with a 4-2 lead. Tourtillott finished strong in the third, scoring an escape and a takedown to earn the hard-fought 7-2 win by decision.

Antigo ran into another tough customer in the 126 pound class. The Hawks' Wyatt Brandt was 33-8 last season and a sectional qualifier, and was able to defeat the Robins' Sam Hoffman in a 9-1 major decision.

Shawano trotted out yet another 33-8 sectional qualifier in the 152 pound division, and Ben Carroll was able to defeat Antigo's Neil Bretl by pin at 2:54.

Lucas Meidl wrestled in his first varsity action for Antigo at 145 pounds, but came up short against Carter Schmidt by pinfall at 0:49.

Thomas Verzal looked good early for the Robins at 182 pounds, scoring an early takedown of Quardell Littleowl. The Hawk fought back with a reversal and near fall to end the first period, before earning the win via pinfall at 2:47.

Gideon Sass competed for Antigo at 170 pounds, against another Hawk sectional qualifier in Gage Timm. Sass fought out of several difficult positions but eventually lost by pinfall at 5:20.

Hunter Cordova donned the maroon and white in the heavyweight division, dropping the match by pin at 2:37 to Nick Kohn.

For Shawano, Trace Yeager at 195 pounds and Brady Stomberg at 106 pounds took forfeit wins. The teams had a double forfeit at 113.

The Red Robins now turn their attention to one of the main events of the season, hosting the John Roberts Invitational this Saturday in the Sheldon Fieldhouse. The wrestling action starts at 10 a.m., and the public is encouraged to attend this early season tourney that will showcase 16 teams.

Joining Antigo, and the Elcho Hornets as another local squad, will be teams from Ashland, Athens, Cameron, Clintonville, Crivitz, Hayward, Lakeland, Manawa, Marathon, Menominee Indian, Rosholt, Shiocton, Three Lakes, and Waupaca.
