Typhoon finishes third in Valley, set to host Regionals starting Friday
The Antigo American Legion baseball team wrapped up its 2019 regular season Tuesday with a Wisconsin Valley League game at Wisconsin Rapids.
In a battle to decide second place in the final standings it was Wisconsin Rapids rolling to an 11-1 win over the Typhoon. Plover had previously clinched the league title with a 13-1 record.
“Credit to Rapids,” head coach Alex Heiny said. “They're a very good team and the hit the ball well tonight, it was a tough night for us, we had the bases loaded three times and only came away with one run.”
The bottom of the first inning saw Rapids jump out to an early advantage. Jack Wenzel delivered a run-scoring double, Nathan Krommenakker came through with a two-run double and Garett Huber added an RBI ground-out for a 4-0 score.
The Typhoon scored its lone run of the game in the top half of the second inning, when Neil Bretl drove in a run with a ground-out to make it a 4-1 contest.
Wisconsin Rapids answered right back in its half of the second with a sacrifice fly by Wenzel, while a fielder's choice ground-out by Jake Wipfli in the third pushed the score to 6-1.
The Rangers produced another big inning in the fourth as they plated four runs. Josh Zwicke delivered a sacrifice fly, Krommenakker drove in two with a single and Huber's RBI double put his team up 10-1.
Rapids ended the game in the bottom of the fifth on the 10-run mercy rule with an RBI single from Donovan Brandl for the 11-1 final.
Cody Urban was Antigo's leading hitter on the night with a two-for-three performance. A.J. Kirsch, Nick Marshall, Logan Doering and Bretl each had one knock, but the Typhoon was unable to come through with runners in scoring position in the defeat.
Urban, Korbin Krueger, Jordon Arrowood and Bretl all saw time on the mound. The quartet allowed a total 12 Rapids hits, while walking six and striking out one.
With the loss, the Antigo Legion team finishes the regular season with a 15-9 record, and ends in third place in the eight-team Valley League standings.
The Typhoon will next host the Class AA Region Two Tournament beginning on Friday. Antigo takes on Shawano at 8 p.m., with Rhinelander and Pulaski playing prior at 5:30 p.m.
The winner of the four-team double elimination regional advances to the Class AA State Tournament, set for Mauston July 26-30. Antigo has played in the last two state tournaments, taking second in 2017.
“It all comes down to this weekend,” Heiny added. “We have a great opportunity ahead of us to make it back to state.”
