Red Robins easily sweep T-Birds in GNC boys tennis
space
The Antigo boys tennis team traveled to Minocqua Tuesday afternoon to take on Lakeland Union High School.  The Robins swept the entire Great Northern Conference match, smashing the Thunderbirds 7-0.

Sunny weather conditions made for a long night of tennis, as the snow surrounding the facility melted, flooding half of the courts and leaving only four playable.

“It was a great match and I still believe we have a lot of room for improvement,” commented head coach Dave Zalewski.

On the singles side, the Robins were led by Jared McFarland at number one singles who downed his opponent, winning his match in two sets, both with scores of 6-1.

At the bottom of the singles lineup, playing number four singles, Simon McPhail beat Riley Littleton 6-0, 6-2.  Lakeland's Josh Kakuska lost to Antigo's Garret Husnick at number two singles with scores of 6-0, 6-4 in two sets, while Calvin Jansen defeated Gavin Thompson at number three singles 7-5, 6-3 in the closest match of the night.

Doubles play saw Brody Bunnell and Joe Bartletti breeze past Lakeland's number one pairing with scores of 6-0 and 6-1, while the Robins' number three doubles team of Sam Bretl and Ben Morris beat their opponents in two sets with the same scores.

At number two doubles, Antigo's Jerome Jones and Brett Farmer also defeated their Thunderbird opposition in two sets 6-2, 6-0.

“These two really fought for there matches until the very end and I believe both of them could have gone either way,” said coach Zalewski about Calvin Jansen and Garret Husnick.

Zalewski decided to award the game ball to the two freshman, because of the effort and perseverance they showed in their individual matches.

The Antigo tennis boys are now 2-0 in GNC meet and are scheduled to travel to Medford Thursday to take on the Red Raiders in another conference matchup, beginning at 5 p.m.
