WIAA tournament time is nearly upon us, with excitement picking up all over the area. Boys and girls hockey seedings are decided, girls basketball will follow this weekend and boys hoops is not far behind.

Thursday night, one of the area teams to keep an eye on for a deep postseason run, the Elcho girls basketball team, won its second straight Northern Lakes Conference championship, with a 68-44 rout of Three Lakes.

Elcho finishes 11-1 in the Northern Lakes and is 17-2 overall, no doubt headed for a high seed in division five. The Wittenberg-Birnamwood girls are also likely headed for a high seed. The Lady Charges will compete in division three, and currently hold a mark of 15-3.

The Antigo boys team currently sits at 12-6 overall.

Girls basketball playoffs open with regionals on Tues. Feb. 20. Boys start playoff competition Tues. Feb. 27, while boys and girls hockey is set to roll next week.

Antigo is a three seed for the hockey postseason which starts this Tuesday, and will enjoy a first round bye before its opening contest on Thursday, Feb. 15. The Northern Edge girls team is a six seed, and are at Fox Cities on Friday, Feb. 16.

A complete recap of the Elcho girls big win is featured today in sports.
