Red Robins miss out on third period chances in Verona loss
space
The Antigo Red Robins hockey team dropped its second straight game Saturday, falling at Verona by a final score of 5-2.

Despite the score, shots were nearly even for the contest, with the Wildcats holding a 40-34 advantage.

The Robins did outshoot Verona 16-7 in the third period, but were unable to take advantage of three power play opportunities in the frame. Verona penalties came at the 7:22, 9:47, and 14:29 marks, but each time Antigo could not put the puck in the net. In fact, Antigo struggled on the man advantage all night, going 0-6, dropping its season percentage on the power play to 22.9.

Power play had some zone entry issues but once we set up we had some good looks, Head Coach Matt Borneman said. We need to work on our break out and zone entry so we keep possession of the puck.

It was part of a big penalty night, as the Wildcats racked up seven penalties to six for the Robins.

The game was tightly reffed, Borneman noted. We may have taken more penalties than we typically do, but I did not feel we played out of character.

Ironically, Antigo’s first goal of the night was of the shorthanded variety. Trailing 3-0, Chris Krueger was called for a cross check at 14:17 of the second period, and just 17 seconds later the Robins scored, as Adam Schmidt netted the goal, assisted by Matt Winter.

The score remained at 3-1 until the early moments of the second period, as Verona showed its prowess on the power play. Drew Yeager was credited with the goal at the 1:54 mark, following an interference call on Eric Langseth. Graham Sticha and Walker Haessig had assists, as the Wildcats moved the puck well to find the open man and a three goal lead.

Leo Renlund’s second goal of the game a little over four minutes into the third make it 5-1, putting things well out of reach for the Robins.

Antigo did continue to battle, with C.J. Levis scoring his team leading 13th goal of the season just over a minute later. Schmidt was credited with the assist.

Brody Bunnell made 35 saves in goal for Antigo in defeat, while his counterpart, Verona’s Garhett Kaegi stopped 32.

Antigo fell to 5-9-1 overall with the non-conference loss. Verona, who leads the Big Eight conference standings, moved to 12-3-2 on the season. The defeat put a slight damper on what was overall a fun weekend for the Red Robins, who took in a Badger hockey game and toured its facilities among other team bonding activities.

I think the team had a fun weekend, it’s always great to see the team interact and bond in ways other than on the ice, Borneman added. The facility and locker room was truly special and it was pretty cool to see Joe Piskula’s mug hanging on the wall.

The Robins will get a fair amount of practice time in before their next game.

Antigo will have it’s work cut out for it Friday, as they compete in the Warrior Invitational, hosted by Wausau West. Friday, the Robins face perennial state power Eau Claire Memorial in a 6:15 game, and depending out the outcome, will meet either Wausau West or Notre Dame Academy on Saturday.

West tourney is another great challenge for us, Borneman said. We have four days to shore up some areas of concern and just keep trucking forward.
