Pee Wee skaters are lone weekend winners

Antigo area youth hockey teams returned to the ice Saturday after a Christmas layoff and experienced mixed results.

BANTAMS (14U)

The Antigo Bantams team played two games at D.C. Everest Saturday and suffered tough defeats by scores of 6-1 and 7-1.

Everest’s Parker Neitzke netted the first three goals of the game for the Flames, as his team built a 6-0 third period lead before the Jr. Robins finally got on the board. Garrett Husnick scored unassisted with under a minute remaining for Antigo’s lone goal.

Aaron Converse started in goal for Antigo and made 23 saves. Everest outshot Antigo 29-14 for the contest.

Antigo seem to lose its legs on Everest’s big ice in the second game, as shots tilted more heavily in the Flames’ favor at 55-17. Converse made 48 saves in the 7-1 defeat. The Jr. Robins’ lone goal came courtesy of defenseman Landon Nelson, unassisted in the second period.

PEE WEES (12U)

The Antigo Pee Wees also took on Everest at the Greenheck Fieldhouse Saturday, but came away with a split.

Game one went to Everest by a tight 3-2 final. Antigo struck first on an unassisted Jack Hilger score in the first period, but eventually found themselves trailing by a 3-1 count late in the third, before Zach Roth found the back of the net, with an assist from Owen Dickman.

Goaltender Nolan Bunnell stopped 18 of the 21 shots he saw in net during the loss.

The second Pee Wee game of the day belonged to the Jr. Robins, as Dickman snapped a tied affair with what would be the eventual game winner, coming just under three minutes into the third period. Antigo went on for the 4-3 victory.

Dickman and Hilger each had two goals, all were unassisted.

Bunnell made 21 saves in the win.

Shots for the two games showed how evenly matched the teams were. Antigo outshot Everest 22-21 in game one, while shots were even at 24 apiece in the second.

SQUIRTS (10U)

Antigo’s squirt team also played two games on the road Saturday, taking on the Wausau Warjacks. The Jr. Robins hung tough for both games, before falling by scores of 6-3 and 7-6.

Game one saw Antigo take a 2-1 lead after the first period, thanks to goals from Jack Siegman and Carson Rhode. Wausau took control in the second however with two goals and added another three in the third.

The Jr. Robins were able to put up another score early in the third, when Cade Tiedemann scores unassisted on the power play.

Game two was much tighter, as Tiedemann netted a hat trick, Jacob Broeske added a goal and an assist, while Rhode and Alex Brittenham also found the back of the net in the 7-6 loss.

Ved Patel started in goal for Antigo in both games and made a total of 28 saves.
