Northern Edge gets rocked by Western Wisconsin Stars, 7-1
space
The Antigo girls hockey team had a tough non-confernence loss as it faced off with the Western Wisconsin Stars on Saturday putting its record at 0-5-1 for the season.

Alicia Turunen would once again have a busy afternoon in goal saving 45 shots through the contest. The girls had a difficult time clearing the puck from their zone, getting out shot 52-10.

Turunen played a fantastic game," Northern Edge Head Coach Kevin Sandstrom said. She kept us in the game."

The Northern Edge entered the game with a short-handed bench having just 11 players suiting up, with some key players not present.

The Western Wisconsin Stars would strike first at 2:53 into the game.

Lauren Kefalinos was able to answer to tie the game with her first varsity goal taking the puck unassisted and finding the back of the net at the 14:30 mark.

We skated well in the first, it was one of the best periods we've put together this season," Sandstrom added.

The Edge have played well in the first period thus far in the season, staying near even with its opponents. But it's been in the second and third that continue to be a struggle.

The second and third periods saw the Stars take advantage of the Edge's short bench to wear them down. Western Wisconsin got a quick goal starting off the second just 0:52 in and would follow it up with two more at 6:25 and 9:48, all were even handed.

The third period would see much of the same with the Stars getting 23 shots on goal, three of which would find the net at 9:41, 11:51, and a short handed goal at 13:03.

We have some things to work on," Sandstrom added. Our focus at practice will be to get more shots on goal."

Bailey Williams would lead the Stars with a team high four points coming off three goals and one assist.

The Northern Edge will head to Medford on Tuesday in a Great Northern Conference match-up at the Simek Recreational Center.
