Robins clip T-Birds, Medford is next in volleyball playoffs
space
The Antigo Red Robins volleyball team is moving on in the WIAA division two playoffs, after a regional win over the Lakeland Thunderbirds Tuesday night, 3-0.

Second seeded Antigo jumped on top of the seventh seeded Thunderbirds in every set and went on to the 25-11, 25-16, and 25-20 victory, in a match played at the Sheldon Fieldhouse.

We started off aggressively which helped set the tone for the entire match, Head Coach Jesse Knetter said. We got leads in every set, especially the second where we started up 8-0.

Sarah Roller was key on the defensive end with seven blocks four kills. Emma Nicholson added three blocks and six kills, Emma Jansen added seven kills and two blocks, while Elyse Incha and Nicole Voytovich had two blocks each. Clare Aulik added five kills.

Our defense stepped it up tonight, Head Coach Jesse Knetter said. Which made it easier for our back row to dig anything that wasn’t blocked.

Emma Jaje was the digs leader on the night for the Robins with 22, while Brinna Mauk added eight and Lizzy West six.

Antigo finished with an 88.7 serve percentage for the night, with three aces from Mauke, two served by Jaje, and one each from West, Laynie Weix, and Amaya McCann.

It was a good first win in regionals, Knetter added. It helps continue building momentum as we move forward.

The Robins advance to a regional semifinal on Thursday, when they will host another Great Northern Conference rival in Medford.

The third seeded Raiders advanced with a straight sets win over Tomahawk Tuesday. The teams split their regular season meetings, with the Robins winning 3-0 at the GNC meet in Mosinee on Sept. 16, and Medford taking the most recent meeting 3-2 in Antigo on Sept. 26.

Thursday’s regional semifinal begins at 7 p.m., with the winner advancing to Saturday’s regional final against the winner of Merrill and Northland Pines.
