Cross country teams wrap up conference season over weekend
space
Northland Pines High School hosted the 2017 boys and girls Great Northern Conference cross country meet Saturday in Eagle River. Antigo boys placed seventh overall while the girls came in sixth.

Both teams did very well, Antigo Coach April Bembenek said. They had a goal in mind and used that as motivation during the race. Many of them setting personal bests on the course.

Late season meets can be iffy at best when depending on the weather, but this year’s conference races were held in ideal weather with any rain holding off until all runners were done.

This years runners of the year are Kavanaugh FitzPatrick of Lakeland for the boys and Ashley Peterson, also of Lakeland for the girls. FitzPatrick finished 20 seconds ahead of teammate Darius Diver with a time of 15:56.4 to 16:15.5. Peterson had a bigger gap between her and second place Alayana Franson of Rhinelander. Peterson earned her honors with a time of 19:08.8 to Franson’s 19:31.6.

Antigo’s best effort for the boys came from Zach Morris, he placed 22nd overall with a time of 18:09.2. Logan Edwards finished 28th at 18:22.0; Deiontae Barner was 30th at 18:28.9; Cody Urban was 43rd at 20:06.8; Kaden Steckbauer was 45th at 20:09.6; and Nick Marshall was 46th at 20:14.0.

Lakeland took first in the conference with 51 points, Medford drew second place with 57. Host Northland Pines was third in the GNC with 84 points; Tomahawk was fourth with 101; Mosinee came in fifth with 111; Rhinelander was sixth with 119 and Antigo seventh with 168 points.

For the Lady Robins, Jami Nonnenmacher paced the team coming in 17th with a time of 21:07.9. McKenzie Schroepfer finished 22nd at 21:41.6; Ella Kohler was 36th at 22:59.7; Evie Leveque was 38th at 23:21.1; and Emily Gravitter was 42nd at 24:46.1.
