Red Robin harriers look to Conference meet Saturday
space
A rain soaked course at the 41st Annual Hatchet Cross Country Invitational Saturday at the Edgewater Golf Course kept Red Robin runners from marking any personal best times.

Tomahawk is a great course to get personal best, but today weather played a factor into the times, Antigo Coach April Bembenek noted. It was chilly and very rainy causing officials to combine the varsity and junior varsity races into one.

As expected, Lakeland’s Kavanaugh Fitzpatrick led the boys portion but not without a challenge by Port Edwards Miguel Mathais. Fitzpatrick posted a time of 15:43.31 with Mathais coming in at 16:06.28.

Sweeping spots three and four were Lakeland’s Darius Diver (16:08.95) and Jack Garcia (16:33.05). Ashland garnered fifth and sixth place with Maury Miller (16:37.50) and Walker Miller (16:38.64). Host Tomahawk’s Drew Bolder placed seventh (17:20.78); Phillips’ Jed Miller was eighth (17:34.50); Mosinee’s Grayson Barrett was ninth (17:43.83); and Tomahawk’s Evan Ploeckelman rounded out the top 10 (17:44.89).

Zach Morris led Antigo taking 27th place with a time of 18:46.08. He was followed by Logan Edwards in 36th (19:08.32); Deiontae Barner in 46th (19:41.42); Cody Urban in 52nd (20:17.20); Kaden Steckbauer in 57th (20:54.37); and Nick Marshall in 59th (20:58.07).

Lakeland took the team title with 45 points while the Robins finished ninth with 218.

For the ladies, Ashley Peterson of Lakeland took top honors with a time of 19:12.39. Alayna Franson of Rhinelander placed second (19:56.12); Haley Voermans-Dea was third (20:27.59); Kate Melms of Lakeland was fourth (20:54.42); Ella Bauer of Ashland was fifth (20:58.30); Aubrey Anderson and Maddie Nelson, both from Lakeland finished sixth and seventh (21:00.15 and 21:01.81); Anna Sturzl of Rhinelander was eighth (21:12.49); Annikka Johnson from Phillips was ninth overall (21:17.77); and Katie Tharman of Lakeland closed out the top 10 (21:20.94).

For the Robins, McKenzi Schroepfer led the way placing 22nd with a time of 22:09.02. Jami Nonnenmacher was 26th (22:25.56); sister Jena Nonnenmacher was 45th (23:58.55); Ella Kohler was 48th (24:12.57); Evie Leveque placed 51st (24:28.06); and Emily Gravitter was 56th (25:56.23).

The Lakeland ladies too team honors with 28 points, Antigo placed eighth with 192.

I am very proud of both teams efforts today, Bembenek added. We will start tappering off in training now as we approach the final two weeks of the season.

Saturday brings the Great Northern Conference meet hosted this year by Northland Pines. Race start is slated for 11 a.m.
