Strong second half puts Robins over Bluejays 4-1 in boys soccer
space
Continuing a long stretch of home matches, the Red Robin boys soccer team kicked off its homecoming week, hosting Merrill for both junior varsity and varsity matches.

The JV team fell 3-1 with Zech Steber marking the lone Antigo goal. Varsity fared much better, defeating the Blue Jays 4-1.

This was a pivotal win for our boys tonight, and it was a genuine team effort with goals and assists distributed among a number of guys, Robins Coach Ben Wilhelm stated. It was awesome to see them play at a high level the entire match, and watch them actualize what they know they are capable of.

Antigo started the match confidently with an exceptionally early goal in the seventh minute from captain Will Brown, assisted by forward Noah Samolinski.

However, Merrill was able to answer 10 minutes later in the 17th minute with a shot from Merrill on a tight and unlikely angle, eluding Antigo keeper Ben Lewandowski. The first half played on, and Merrill almost scored a second time, but that goal was called off due to an offside forward.

First half play was fairly even with possession almost 50/50. Lewandowski had nine saves and Antigo recorded about eight shots on goal in the first half.

In the second half, Antigo came out even stronger, controlling possession for well over 60 percent as the Robins stayed energized while the Bluejays tired.

The score remained tied until the last 15 minutes when Antigo finally capitalized on an increasing number of shots.

At 78 minutes, Jared McFarlane scored, assisted by Samolinski. A minute later, Doug Dittel scored assisted by Jacob Peloquin. Finally in the 82nd minute, Peloquin scored, and was assisted by McFarlane.

Lewandowski finished the match with 19 total saves. Other defensive contributions came from a back line of Alex Gray, Cullen Williams, Will Brown, Cole Sowinski, and Brandon Lucht.

The Robins face Great Northern Conference opponent Rhinelander next, at home on Thursday evening at 4:30 p.m.
