Resilient Typhoon is state bound again after regional tournament win
space
The Antigo American Legion Post number three baseball team is returning to the Class AA State Tournament for the third consecutive year, after winning the regional tournament played in Rhinelander this past weekend.

Following a 13-3 opening round win over Minocqua Wednesday, the Typhoon fell to Shawano 11-2 Thursday, putting their backs against the wall in the double elimination tournament.

After the loss against Shawano we had a talk with the team, Head Coach Alex Heiny said. The message was I believe in you guys you’re more than capable of winning three straight games, we win Friday and get to Saturday, then it’s just like playing in a high school sectional, you have to win two games in single elimination.

Antigo would get to Saturday, following an 18-1 drubbing of Merrill Friday night.

The Merrill win set up a rematch with Shawano Saturday, and the Typhoon would go on to crush the Patriots 21-2 in five innings.

Nick Marshall tossed a complete game and allowed just one earned run off three hits with two walks and three strikeouts. Jake Husnick doubled twice and finished with five hits. Matt Winter, A.J. Kirsch, Hunter Kirsch and Garrett Held had three hits each, while Jesse Jankowski finished with two hits, including a home run.

The victory over Shawano set up a winner take all championship game against Rhinelander. The Rebels lost their opening round game against Shawano, but strung together victories over Merrill, Minocqua and Shawano to reach the championship game against Antigo.

The Typhoon jumped out to an early lead in the title contest and a faced a furious Rebels comeback, as they tied the contest at 13 in the top of the seventh inning.

Jake Fleischman then entered a pressure backed situation as a reliever, coming into the tie game with no one out. With the outcome hanging in the balance, Fleischman responded, striking out the side to end the Rebels comeback bid and setting the stage for a dramatic finish.

Held would play the hero in the bottom of the seventh, as his line drive into the left center field gap scored Hunter Kirsch from second base for the walk off 14-13 win.

Held had a perfect game at the plate, going five for five, while Husnick and Hunter Kirsch had three hits each.

They truly believed they could do it, Heiny said. They are a resilient bunch, there is no quit in this team, they’ve played hard until the final out in every single game this summer.

The Antigo Legion team will take on Kaukauna in game one of the Class AA State Tournament at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Athletic Park in Merrill.

Other first round matchups on Wednesday include Beaver Dam and River Falls at 1 p.m., Kewaunee County and Waterford at 4 p.m., and Holmen taking on host Merrill at 7 p.m.
