The Antigo American Legion Post number three baseball team opened up their 2017 season at Kretz Park Thursday night, with a thrilling 5-4 win over Wausau Post number 10 in a matchup of Wisconsin Valley Legion League teams.

The game was scoreless until the top of the third inning, when Wausau went in front 1-0, but the Typhoon responded in the bottom half of the frame.

Ryan Brauer singled to drive in Jesse Jankowski, and Hunter Kirsch followed with a sacrifice fly to bring home Collin Meinert to give Antigo a 2-1 advantage.

Wausau tied the contest in the top of the fourth. Zach Pearson doubled and came home on an RBI single by Clay Scult to make the score 2-2. The bottom of the fourth inning saw Meinert put the Typhoon back on top with a sacrifice fly, scoring Garrett Held.

Wausau again tied the game in the back and forth contest in the top of the sixth when a double play groundout plated a run to make it 3-3.

Antigo again had an answer in the bottom of the inning when Held doubled and came around to score on a passed ball for a 4-3 advantage.

Logan Grunenwald doubled in Zach Raeder for the Bulldogs as they again evened the contest in the eighth inning, setting the stage for a dramatic finish.

Meinert led off the bottom of the ninth inning for the Typhoon with a single. Matt Winter followed with a single to left center, and Brauer then laid down a sacrifice bunt to move the runners into scoring position.

Hunter Kirsch was intentionally walked to bring up A.J. Kirsch with the bases loaded, but Kirsch’s bat was not needed, as a passed ball scored Meinert for the winning run.

Brauer led Antigo with two hits on the night.

Nick Marshall got the win in relief, as he allowed a lone hit and one walk in one and two thirds innings of work. Jesse Jankowski got the opening day start and went seven and one third innings, giving up four runs, three earned on six hits.

The Antigo Legion team will look for a 2-0 start today, as they head to Bay Port for a non conference game.
