Early errors do in Red Robins in Kretz Park opener
space
The Antigo Red Robins baseball team played their home opener at Kretz Brothers Park on Tuesday, coming up just short against Pulaski in a 3-2, eight inning loss.

Pulaski sent their staff ace to the mound against the Robins’ lineup and Jack Anderson was up to the task, allowing two run on four hits, while walking only one and striking out four through four innings of work. Cody Urban matched him and more for Antigo. Urban went seven innings on the mound and allowed only one earned run on three hits. Urban walked three and struck out nine.

Cody threw an excellent game, Head Coach Scott Farmer said. After our first inning struggles our defense came around.

Several of those defensive miscues may have been the difference in the game, as Pulaski scored an unearned run in the top of the first inning, thanks to errors by Antigo catcher Garret Held and shortstop Collin Meinert.

The Robins tied the game in the second inning, A.J. Kirsch led off with a double and would come home on a fielder’s choice groundout by Urban.

Pulaski went right back in front in the third, again helped by Antigo miscues. A hit batter started the frame and Jonah Wesoloski’s double made it 2-1 in favor of the Raiders.

We are going to have to better understand the importance of defense and moving runners, Farmer added. We gave them two runs early and that is the difference in the game.

Antigo again tied the game in the third, but that would be it for scoring. Brady Tatro lead at the plate with two hits. The Robins put base runners on in every inning, but stranded all of them.

We need to put the ball in play more often with runners in scoring position, Farmer said. We have guys pressing too much instead of just doing what we practice, seven runners stranded in scoring position and all six of our strikeouts with runners in scoring position.

Pulaski scored what would prove to be the game winning run in extras. Two singles and a fielder’s choice RBI groundout by Carson Williquette put the Raiders ahead for good. Antigo left two runners on in the bottom of the eighth, as they fell to 1-2 on the season. Pulaski, from the Fox River Classic Conference, improved to 1-1.

The Robins will next open Great Northern Conference play on Thursday, traveling to Tomahawk.

The mistakes we are making can be fixed with time and understanding, Farmer said. Our first season starts Thursday as we begin the chase for the conference title.
