Robin lads make first home pitch appearance of season
space
In the Red Robins home opener for boys varsity soccer, Antigo was overcome by Rhinelander 10-0. Despite following up on a road loss to begin the season to Peshtigo earlier in the week, the scoreboard results do not tell a complete story according to Coach Ben Wilhelm.

“In Peshtigo, we faced some early season nervousness, but at our home pitch our guys found their confidence,” Wilhelm said.

In the first half, an early goal was conceded by Antigo, but the Robins were able to hold Rhinelander scoreless for over twenty minutes before the Hodags began rolling once again.

At the 21-minute mark, the score was 1-0 in favor of the visiting Rhinelander team, and shots on goal favored the Hodags 8-1. Within less than four minutes, by the 25th minute of the game, the score would be 4-0.

Another goal shortly before halftime and another four in the second half compounded the 10-0 defeat for the Robins. Goalkeeper Jack McKenna again recorded double digit saves.

Encouraged, Coach Wilhelm said after the game, “In many ways, (particularly) at the beginning of the season, we’re playing at the same level we reached at the end of last season. However, much more work has yet to be done especially in tightening our defense and strengthening our attacks.”

Despite the lopsided scoreboard, Antigo nearly managed to split possession time with Rhinelander. Standing out on offense once again were junior midfielder Matt Hornbuckle and junior forward Gavin Bunnell. Both players saw shots on goal.

Coach Wilhelm also said, “Despite our loss, we were able to significantly disrupt Rhinelander’s game play and frustrate them. We are very encouraged as a team about our progress.”

The varsity boys head to Northland Pines Tuesday for their latest match. Antigo’s next home game is against Medford Thursday at 5 p.m.
