Antigo netters snag 4-3 victory over Lakeland in Lady Robins' tennis opener|
Clutch play by sophomore Emily Wald in her debut performance in a varsity meet helped the Antigo High School girls tennis team score a 4-3 victory over Lakeland in its 2014 opener Thursday.
Her win at No. 4 singles joined triumphs by all three of Antigo’s double pairings — Alexa Samolinski and Sami Smits at the No. 1 spot, Abi Warren and Mandy Petts at No. 2 and Tara Grall and Nikole Houdek at No. 3.
“With such a positive start to the season, I am excited to see how far our doubles teams will go,” Coach Aimee Hein said.
Seniors Samolinski and Smits were solid in their outing, trouncing Lakeland’s Ashley Kidd and Gabby Knauer 6-1, 6-2.
Juniors Warren and Petts won 6-0, 6-0 over the T-Birds’ Alexis Fieck and Rachel Koester. Grall, a senior, and Houdek, a junior, won over Laura Rodriguez and Maddie Quamme 6-1, 6-1.
“They all made winning look easy despite the fact that tonight was both the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles teams' debut as doubles varsity players,” Hein said.
In singles play, senior Maddie Matuszewski encountered a disappointing loss to Lakeland's Maggie Sasse, falling 3-6, 0-6.
Ashley Brown, at No. 2, put up a fight versus Lakeland’s Ali Bognar. Although losing the first set 3-6, she won the second 6-2 but fell in the third 2-6 for the match.
At No. 3 singles, Allison Kondzela lost 4-6, 2-6 to the T-Birds’ Esther Yeung.
“Ashley and Allison unfortunately came up short against their opponents, despite playing quite well,” Hein said.
Tied at 3-all, Wald’s win at No. 4 singles earned Antigo the crown.
“She had a lot of pressure riding on her first ever varsity match as her win was needed to clinch the conference victory,” Hein explained.
Wald easily won the first set, 6-2, but the second teeter-tottered back and forth. Winning the final three games, she took the second 6-3 for the win.
Antigo’s junior varsity team also scored victory in its matches. Taking the court for the Robins were freshman Izzy Matuszewski in singles and senior Sandy Solin and sophomore Molly Brown in doubles.
Antigo is playing at the Pulaski Invitational today. The squad will then travel to Medford on Monday.
