Public works projects heat up
space
As mid-August arrives, the city of Antigo is awash in public works projects.

Department of Public Works crews are patching potholes, personnel from the state Department of Transportation have placed the new left turn signals at the Highway 64/45 intersection into operation, greatly easing congestion at that northside corner, and the big equipment from the Langlade County Highway Department is clawing into the North Elementary School playground preparing for repaving.

And today, the Northeast Asphalt trucks were rolling into Antigo, preparing to blacktop areas by a brutal winter that pockmarked city streets with gravel patches.

“We appreciate the people’s willingness to put up with all the gravel,” Charlie Brinkmeier of the city’s public works department said. “They have been very patient.”

Northeast Asphalt is patching 30 separate areas across the city today that developed after streets had to be fixed to repair water main breaks.

Much of the work centers on Second Avenue and along the Lincoln Street corridor but a map provided by Brinkmeier illustrates damage across the city.

The public works chief said that the patching should be completed today, and then the Northeast crew will turn its attention to Ninth Avenue, where a summerlong utility project will be covered with a new coat of asphalt in the area of City Park.

Brinkmeier said there is more on the horizon as well. The city is preparing for a major water main replacement along Second Avenue from just west of the Spring Brook bridge to Langlade Road. That work will likely begin in September.
