Antigo’s Ian Harkreader crossed the finish line first, beating out fellow Langlade County competitors Cody Artymiuk and Colin Koss to claim top status in the 34th annual Tater Trot 10K race Saturday.

And with Antigo’s Sammy Stimac taking the women’s title, the event proved as a true showcase for the area’s running talent.

Getting its start and end at City Park with a middle jaunt alongside Antigo’s outlying potato fields, the 10K attracted a total of 133 runners with even more competing in the four mile run/walk and one mile fun run.

“The 34th Annual Antigo Tater Trot was another successful family event given the perfect weather,” reiterated Melissa Wilhelm, one of the events co-coordinators. “With almost 400 people participating, we saw a record number of runners and walkers taking part in the four mile and 10K events this year.”

Averaging a quick 5:28 per mile, Harkreader posted a time of 33:58.1 to finish atop the pack. Artymiuk, of Antigo, came in second at 34:31.1 followed by Koss, of Bryant, in third at 36:12.6.

A year ago, Antigo’s Mitch Easker won the event with a time of 33:42.3.

Stimac took the women’s title, beating out her closest competitor by nearly a full minute. She clocked a time of 45:27.5 with Elgin, Illinois’ Kristin Childs taking second in the women’s division at 46:16.9. Gleason’s Becky Eddy was third at 46:30.8 followed by Antigo’s Mary Ponasik in fourth at 47:13.2.

In the 4K run, Mukwonago’s Clay Chalupsky took the men’s title with a time of 26.27. Hatley’s Alexis Balliett was the women’s best at 29:14.4. Among other Antigo competitors, Teale Mach placed second, TJ Beck was seventh, Adam Finn eighth and Joshua Marsh, ninth. On the women’s side, Antigo’s Sarah Duff took fifth, Mandy Petts was seventh and Lynnette Fittante, eighth.

Youth got into the action in the one mile fun run. Of the 85 competitors, Antigo’s Darren Drewelt took the win with a time of 6:16.7. He was joined at the top by fellow Antigo runners Bradley Westen in second (6:27.4) and Ryan Fay, third (6:39.4). Also finishing in the top 10 were Antigo’s Cordell Umland, Whitt Mach and Tanya Zaloudek.
