Moonshine tour, demonstration spark Stovewood Daze at Jennings
space
It was a history buff’s paradise Saturday in Jennings, a side spot in Highway B running across southern Forest County.

Stovewood Daze was held at the historic Mecikalski building in downtown Jennings, a historical marker in the quiet area of the northwoods. Using a construction technique known as stovewood, the general store building was restored in an aggressive program led by the Kohler Foundation.

The Jennings building restoration project is centered in the Mecikalski stovewood structure, one other larger building and three smaller structures and their use for other commercial purposes including a saloon.

The event drew a nice crowd, a number of antique automobilers including several retired Model A Fords and very old tractors scattered for public viewing.

Tours of the building were conducted, Sprechler sodas and even a few of the brewer’s beers were offered and the focus of the day’s history lesson was the manufacture of moonshine, a major enterprise in Forest County during the 1920s and early 1930s.

The tour started in the stovewood building where the history of moonshining was explained and then wound down a trail into the woods where in a clearing, Randy Robinson had a still set up for demonstration purposes and explained how it was made.

Robinson was authentic and very successful in his programs.

It was a great day of history in a community that buzzed with lumberjacks and farmers more than a century ago.
