Fritsch, Ison belt homers as All Stars score 11-8 victory

Alex Fritsch exploded for two home runs while Daniel Ison cracked another Monday as the Antigo 11-12 year old All Star team bounced back from two weekend losses to defeat Appleton Einstein 11-8 for its first win in the state Little League tournament series.

“It was nice to put one in the win column tonight,” Coach Lon Ebel said. “Although we made it harder than we needed to and didn't play our best game defensively, we are excited for the ‘W’ and it still puts us in contention to make the finals. It was a well deserved and much needed win tonight.”

Tagged as the visiting team, Antigo got out to a good start. Reaching on a single, Nevin Cornelius later scored following back-to-back singles by Brady Renfro and Ison with two outs on the board.  Chris Krueger later drove in another run with a single.

Appleton Einstein matched Antigo with two runs in the bottom of the first and then took the lead after two innings, 5-3.

“The boys showed some toughness tonight and fought back with a run in the third,” Ebel said, noting the effort which began after Ison drew a walk. Elliot Orgeman singled to put the runner in scoring position and Chris Breitenfeldt delivered a run-scoring single to come within one, 5-4.

Pitcher Tyler Schroepfer held Appleton Einstein scoreless in the bottom of the third and in the fourth, Antigo’s bats came alive again to regain the lead. Fritsch hit his homer, the first one of the night, before consecutive singles by Eli Fleischman, Renfro, Ison and Krueger helped Antigo go up 7-5.

Appleton answered right back in the bottom of the inning with two runs to bring it back to even at 7-7.

Remaining calm, Antigo again edged ahead in the top of the fifth when Fritsch cracked another solo shot. Cornelius and Fleischman had singles and Ison delivered some insurance with a three-run homer to put Antigo up 11-7.

Stepping in as relief on the mound, Elliot Orgeman got the last six outs and held Appleton to one run in the bottom of the fifth to give Antigo the win.

With his two home runs, Fritsch went 3-5 on the day including a double and two RBIs. The RBI leader with five, Ison was 3-3 with a home run, two singles and three runs scored. Krueger also went 3-3 with singles. Cornelius, Fleischman and Renfro were all 2-4. Orgeman and Breitenfeldt both had singles.

On the pitcher’s mound, Fritsch, Schroepfer, Cornelius and Orgeman struck out three while allowing eight runs (five earned) on six hits, two walks, one hit by pitch and five errors.

Antigo will play Whitefish Bay tonight at 7 p.m. Games are held at Doepke Park in Rib Mountain.
