Antigo's 12U All-Star team advances on to state games|
The Antigo 12U All-Stars are moving on to the State Tournament after its 14-4 dismantling of Wausau American in four innings Friday evening.
As Coach Lon Ebel described, it was “a combination of hot bats, patient plate appearances, and great defense” that allowed the youth all-stars the opportunity to showcase their talents at the upcoming state spectacle.
Alex Fritsch began the day on the mound for Antigo, holding Wausau scoreless in the top of the first inning. Eli Fleischman got Antigo on the board first, recording a two-out, two-RBI hit while later scoring himself on a bases loaded walk.
Wausau American would go on to score two runs in the top of the second before Antigo would be allowed to go off offensively. Fritsch and Nevin Cornelius started things out for Antigo with consecutive singles. Brady Renfro would eventually bring both young men home with a two-RBI double.
After walking two subsequent batters, Chris Krueger managed to drive in two more Antigo runs with a single. In his second plate appearance of the inning, Fritsch batted in yet two more runs with another Antigo double, followed by a two-out double off of the fence from Cornelius that was good for another two scores. Antigo found itself with relatively comfortable 11-2 lead after just two innings.
With impressive infield play from Fleischman, Antigo managed to thwart an attempted Wausau rally and hold them to just one run scored in the third inning. A lead-off home run from Daniel Ison in the bottom of the inning nullified the Wausau score, helping extend the Antigo lead back to nine runs.
The fourth inning belonged to Fritsch. After giving up one run and loading the bases to Wausau American, Fritsch ended the inning with three strikeouts to escape disaster in the top of the inning. At the plate in the bottom of fourth, Fritsch took matters into his own hands with a two-run, walk-off home run that brought the score to 14-3, effectually ending the game on the ten-run mercy rule.
Fritsch day on the mound was marked by four innings of work in which he allowed four runs on seven hits, walking three batters, hitting one with a pitch and striking out four.
Antigo’s all-star pitcher, Fritsch, was also tops in batting. Fritsch finished 3-4 with a home run, double and a single, three runs scored and four runs batted in. Cornelius went 2-3, including a double, two runs scored himself and two RBIs.
Renfro, Ison, Fleischman, and Krueger each ended their evening 1-2, including Ison’s third inning homer. Fleischman was also good for three RBIs in Antigo’s monstrous victory.
