Merle Wendt, local banker, public official, dies at 94

Merle A. Wendt, a longtime public official who helped shape Antigo as a founder of what is now CoVantage Credit Union, died Thursday, July 10, 2014 surrounded by his loving family. He was 94 years old.

Mr. Wendt was a founding member of the Antigo Co-op Credit Union, now known as CoVantage, in the 1950s. He went on to work as vice president of the credit union prior to his retirement in 1985.

He was also exceptionally active in local government, serving on the Antigo Common Council between 1964 and 2002, including several terms as council president. He also was a member of the Langlade County Board, acting in various capacities between 1964 and 2006.

Born Feb. 16, 1920, he was a son of the late Fred and Pauline (Gartske) Wendt. He married Mary Ellen (Reader) Wendt on Sept. 5, 1945. She survives.

Mr. Wendt was a graduate of Antigo High School and a veteran of the Army Air Corps. He was employed by the Chicago and Northwestern Railroad and was the trainman on the last steam excursion train, the 175, that rolled through Antigo in 1957. He changed careers following a work-related injury.

He belonged to the Elks Lodge and Rotary Club and was a member of SS. Mary & Hyacinth Catholic Church.

In addition to his wife, Mary Ellen Wendt of Antigo, survivors include three daughters, Sue Ellen (Ron) Zalewski of Pelican Lake, Denise Wendt of Antigo, and Barbara (Tim) Fermanich of Antigo; a brother, Vern (Irene) Wendt of Antigo; six grandchildren, Ron Zalewski, Jr., Jim Ostermeier, Timothea (Scott) Uttecht, Jennifer (Brian) Hissom, John (Maggie) Fermanich, and Jacob Fermanich; seven great-grandchildren, Lane Zalewski, Logan Hissom, Luke Hissom, Levi Hissom, Emma Fermanich, Stella Uttecht, and Tate Uttecht; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a grandson, Steven Zalewski; two sisters, Lillian Wendt, and Mabel Stone; and four brothers, Oscar, Lloyd, Rufus, and Herb.

Funeral services will be held Monday at 11 a.m. Monday at Strasser-Roller Funeral Home. Interment will follow the service at Elmwood Cemetery. Local veterans will perform military rites.

A memorial will be established in Mr. Wendt’s name.
