Highway B project starts Monday
space
A construction project on County Highway B, that has caused a stir in the Neva Corners area for the last year, is about to get started Monday.

While utility contractors have been in the area preparing wires and fuel lines, the road construction portion of the project will be moving ahead with the segment set to be completed during the summer running from Highway 45 to Chillie Road, which passes the busy Neva Corners intersection.

Affected roads include Highway B from Highway 45 to Chillie Road (1.2 miles), 700 feet of County Highway A through Neva Corners, and Church Road 500 feet north from Neva Corners.

Highways A and B will be detoured north on Highway 45, and east on Highway C to Star Neva, with the Highway B detour continuing on County Highway V.

The affected roads will be accessible for local traffic to homes and businesses, but are closed to through traffic.

The planning work for the project has been underway for an extended period and the new design of Highway A, Church Road and Highway B in the Neva Corners area has prompted a number of citizen meetings with designers, county and state transportation officials.

While the project was being discussed, utility work continued in the segment from Highway 45 to Chillie Road since April.

James Peterson Sons, Inc. of Medford, was the successful bidder for the milling of existing pavement, excavation of road base, culvert replacement, placing of salvaged asphalt base, ditching, concrete curb, gutters and sidewalk, and landscaping portions of the project.

The Langlade County Highway Department will perform work including placing and grading of gravel base, hot-mix asphalt paving, and pavement marking.

Total cost of the construction contracts is $770,000 with 80 percent of the funding provided by the Federal Surface Transportation Program for Rural Roads, and 20 percent county funding.

The project is scheduled to complete by Sept. 5.
