Young bears paying visits to Antigo
space
It seems that bears are just about everywhere in the Antigo area, and they tend to stand out when they appear in residential and business districts of the city.

On Thursday afternoon, an employee at BMO Harris Bank at Fifth Avenue and Clermont Street saw one saunter past one of the windows, crossing Fifth Avenue and then head for the area of the McCormick-Klessig and Associates insurance building in the 500 block of Clermont Street.

The bear was on the move and the police department checked a number of reports, including one in the 200 block of Clermont Street that indicated the bruin had been chased up a tree by residents of the area. There were other reports coming from a number of parts of the city as the animal sauntered around the community.

According to officials with the Department of Natural Resources, this is the time of year for bear complaints, with the animals on the move after a long winter and spring.

The bears being seen in town, and around garages and cabins throughout the area, are likely yearlings, officials said, sent out on their own, sometimes roughly, as their mothers prepare to breed and have cubs again next spring.

“They are like teen-agers,” one official said, noting that the young animals are scouting for food anywhere they can get it and probably a bit confused as they strike out on their own for the first time without their mother’s comforting presence.

Bears tend to be shy and solitary animals but they are opportunistic as well and will go where the food takes them, and in Thursday’s case, that meant coming into town for a look around.

The DNR has a few hints on its website for living with bears in Wisconsin. They include making bird feeders inaccessible to bears, or even taking them down entirely during the overnight hours, keeping garbage cans tightly closed and indoors is possible, and cleaning and putting away outdoor grills after use.
