Mattoon school gets new roof
space
Four of the Antigo school district’s aging elementary schools, which just a few years ago were targeted for closure, are getting new roofs this summer.

Work is underway now at Mattoon and East elementary schools, with West likely getting underway next week, and tonight, the board of education is expected to approve the bid for reroofing North Elementary School as well.

“They’re pretty much right on schedule,” Tim Prunty, the district’s supervisor of building and grounds, said.

McNeil West Construction is doing the work at East and West for $91,000 while Tradewell Construction got the bid for the Mattoon Roof for $78,000.

Those bids were approved in May, with work starting shortly thereafter. The North Elementary roof bid was delayed until tonight due to the substantial cost, which required rebidding.

Money for the work comes from the district’s fund balance. Earlier this year, the board approved transferring $400,000 from that account to begin the long processs of repairs to the elementary schools as outlined in a report prepared by CESA No. 10.

Prunty explained that the new roofs are designed to improve ventilation and add protection against ice damming.

“We’re hoping the new shingles solve those problems,” he said.

Two of the district’s other elementary schools, Spring Valley and Crestwood, may be next on the list for new roofs. Pleasant View’s roof was replaced two years ago due to storm damage.

The small schools were targeted for closure as part of an elementary consolidation plan that would have constructed one centralized facility, a move hailed as a way to save money through the elimination of duplication of services while improving educational opportunities for all students.

But that plan failed repeatedly at the ballot box and voter backlash shifted the board toward saving the facilities and moving away from referendum discussions.

Other maintenance projects underway this summer include reroofing a section at the high school and removing asbestos at Crestwood Elementary School.
