American Legion team to host Clintonville tonight|
The Antigo American Legion Post 3 baseball teams began their 2014 seasons with a doubleheader Friday night at Kretz Park. The Marquette Blues (MI) made the trip to Antigo on Friday before traveling to Marshfield on Saturday. In the first game the 19U Legion squad defeated the Blues 4-3, while the 17U Junior Legion was shocked 16-0 against the Blues.
The first game was a pitchers’ duel as Erik Schielke took the mound for the Typhoon and was sharp in his season debut. Schielke pitched five innings, allowing one unearned run off three hits while striking out three.
Pitching for the Blues, Trevor Bratonia went five and 2/3 innings and was charged with three runs off of four hits with and five walks and four strikeouts.
The game was scoreless until the top of the fourth when the visiting Blues were able to scratch across a run, thanks to a leadoff single by Ryan Hanson, who managed to score later in the inning on an error.
In the top of sixth, Hanson led off with a home run to left center to extend the Marquette lead 2-0. Antigo answered back with a three-run, two-out rally in the bottom half of the inning. Alex Nagel drew a walk, followed with a base hit by Arin VerHagen and a walk by Caleb Raddant. Nagel was then awarded home after a balk, setting up Jake Fleischman who proceeded to scorch a line drive that was too difficult to handle for the Blues’ right fielder, allowing two runs to score.
After the sixth inning heroics put the Typhoon ahead temporarily 3-2, the Blues tied the game in the top of the sixth with an RBI single by Riley Lynch. In the bottom of the seventh, lead-off hitter Jake Husnick reached on a single and advanced on a well-executed sacrifice bunt by Max Nowinsky along the first base line.
After a Justen Wegter flyout, Schielke delivered the walk-off hit, smashing a line drive off the left center field fence to score Husnick and allowed the Typhoon to claim the victory 4-3.
On top of his solid pitching performance, Schielke led the team with three hits, while VerHagen finished with two in the winning effort. Wegter was decided the winning pitcher in relief.
In the second game, the 17U Junior Legion team took on the veteran 19U Marquette team, hanging tough with the Blues through five innings before the visitors exploded a combined 12 runs in the sixth and seventh innings.
Payton LeBombard went the distance for the Blues, pitching the complete game shutout having allowed five hits and two walks while striking out 4 batters.
Offensively for Marquette, McKinley Larson led the way with a three-hit effort including a double and a triple, with Derek Stone and LeBombard contributing two hits apiece. For the Antigo squad, Brady Tatro finished with three singles while Brett Wilhelm recorded two hits of his own.
The Antigo Legion team (1-0) is scheduled to play four games this week, hosting Clintonville on Tuesday at 7 p.m., Tomahawk on Thursday with a 6 p.m. start time and then travelling to Waupaca on Saturday for doubleheader beginning at noon.
The Junior Legion (0-1) will host a doubleheader against South Wood County starting at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday.
