Lady Hodags advance in soccer regional as Robins season ends
space
The Lady Robins soccer team ended its season with 5-0 loss to Rhinelander Thursday night in what coaches thought was going to be an even greater loss. It was an achievement in and of itself for Coach Bethany Bauknecht.

“This was a big accomplishment for us to only lose by five against Rhinelander,” Coach Bauknecht said later after the game. “Holding them at bay for almost 20 minutes was also huge.”

In the WIAA Regional first round, the Lady Robins fared better than earlier in the week against the Hodags, when a mercy-rule emplaced 12-0 victory for Rhinelander left a sour taste in Antigo’s mouth.

The Robins came ready to battle against a tenacious Hodags’ offense and their powerful attack. Markea Wyro was in net for Antigo and blocked 26 of Rhinelander’s 31 shots on goal.

“She played an astonishing game, one of her best yet,” said Coach Bauknecht. “Markea, along with our powerhouse defense: Steph Hanke, Emily Wald, Breanna Brenneke, Brianne Ackley and Marissa Hartman, were able to shut down Rhinelander’s attack and held them to only two goals in the first half.”

The Lady Robins held the Hodags scoreless for over twenty minutes in the first half. Rhinelander’s Sydney Zettler netted the first goal of the day at the 22:19 mark.

Antigo was able to apply pressure on Rhinelander’s goalkeeper in the first half. Mikayla Nelson, Maggie Gallenberg and Anna Reineke were exceptional at moving the ball up the field and giving the Robins front forwards opportunity to attack.

Ariane Zimmerman, Jillian Incha and Tyler Tatro were able to push through the Hodags defense and amass shots on goal, none of which made contact with the net.

The Lady Robins were able to come out just as strong in the second half with Areonna Schreiber, Lili Wagner, and Tatro able to put shots on goal in the second half, still to no avail.

Bauknecht later added, “The girls put up an amazing fight against the top seed team in the conference. It was a great way to end our season.”
