Robin men clinch GNC title, defeat Indians 8-2 at home|
The Red Robins baseball team moved one step closer to greatness on their season by clinching the Great Northern Conference Thursday evening in an 8-2 victory over Mosinee.
“Overall, great night and a big win to clinch conference,” Coach Dan Bastle said after Antigo’s victory at Kretz Brothers Park.
Randy Krebs recorded the win for Antigo. Krebs allowed two runs, including one in the top of the seventh that luckily did not inspire a comeback, off of five hits. Krebs struck out seven batters.
Both teams were scoreless through the first two innings. Luke Osborne scored first for the Robins in the bottom of the third, allowing Antigo a 1-0 lead going into its explosive fourth inning.
Giving up one run in the top of the inning to tie the game at one apiece, Cameron Noskowiak scored the first of seven Antigo runs after beginning the bottom of the fourth with a lead-off single.
Two fielding errors, three walks and a wild pitch helped the Robins’ short ball performance in mustering a lead they would eventually not relinquish.
Leading off with a single in the top of the seventh inning, Trevor Grabow would eventually score the Indians’ second and final run of the game.
Short ball reigned supreme on the day, as Antigo’s top batter, Krebs, was 3-4 with three singles. Robby Bastle finished his day 2-4 with two first base hits.
Blake Kirsch and Noskowiak were each 1-3 with a single apiece. Osborne was 0-3, but scored two runs for Antigo after two consecutive walks in the third and fourth innings.
With its conference clinching win, the GNC played out as such: 1. Antigo (10-0, 17-1), 2. Mosinee (6-4, 7-5), 3. Tomahawk (5-4, 8-5); 4. Lakeland (6-6, 11-8), 5. Rhinelander (4-6, 5-8), 6. Northland Pines (2-7, 4-10), and 7. Medford (3-8; 3-15).
The Robins led the conference in team scoring and team defense. Antigo is averaging 8.8 runs per game while its pitching staff and defense are allowing just 1.6.
The Robins get an extended period of rest before moving onward against Stevens Point next Tuesday at Bukholt Park beginning at 5 p.m.
