Hornets lose to Cardinals in sloppy conditions
space
The Elcho Hornets baseball team continued to slide after Monday evenings 7-2 loss to the Crandon Cardinals. Despite Alec Smith’s nine strikeout performance, the Hornets’ bats were only able to grant them two runs on three hits.

“It was really two, strong pitching performances on a wet and muddy night,” Coach Brandon Sharpe said after Monday’s game.

Smith struck out nine batters and walked two in his six innings pitches. Giving up six hits, Smith earned four runs in his decided loss Monday evening.

“Alec provided us with another quality outing only to have another loss,” Sharpe said of his senior pitcher. “He has pitched well every time he has taken the mound.”

Elcho scored in the top of the first inning from BJ McKinney following a walk and Luke Brendemuehl single.

After Smith gave up a two-out double in the bottom of the first to no avail for the Cardinals, a passed ball and a second baseman error in the second helped garner Crandon four runs on three hits.

The Hornets would not score again until a Trevor Novak crossed the plate off of a Trinton Menomin RBI single in the top of sixth inning. A three-run answer from the Cardinals in the bottom of the inning would put the game away for Crandon.

Smith, Brendemuehl and Menomin each recorded one hit apiece for the Hornets, the latter two batters each batting in a run.
