Chargers have great showing at Green Devil

Competing in the Green Devil Invite, the Wittenberg-Birnamwood Chargers finished just outside the top 10 in an enormous event featuring 24 high school golf teams from all around the state of Wisconsin.

“I was very pleased with the result from today on an unfamiliar and challenging course,” Coach Chris Bartletti said.

Taking 11th place overall in the Chargers’ largest meet of the year so far, Wittenberg-Birnamwood shot a collective round of 378.

Other participating teams placed as follows: Baraboo (328), Altoona (336), West Salem (339), GET (355), Newman (356), Regis (366), Arcadia (369), Wautoma (373), Black River Falls (374), Marathon (375), Witt-Birn (378), Neillsville (379), Stanley-Boyd (387), C.C./Spencer (387), Westby (389), Rhinelander (393), Viroqua (403), Columbus (404), Adams-Friendship (418), Colby (421), Nekoosa (436), Fall Creek (441), Mauston (445) and Thorp (451).

Maverick Bushman shot the best individual round of the day for the Chargers team at 88 strokes, including an even 44-split on the front and back nine. Bushman managed to get into red numbers, sinking a two-stroke birdie on the par three 10th hole.

Gabby Curtis of Altoona finished in first place with a personal best round of 72, six strokes better than two tied for second place.

Coach Bartletti later said of his top team finisher, “Maverick played one of the best rounds of the season and could have scored much better with the exception of poor course management on one hole and a few three putts.”

Brant Linke shot 90, including three consecutive pars holes nine through 11. Close behind was Kyle Adamski at 92.

Freshman Madi Bushman’s score of 108 caught the attention of her coach.

“I was especially pleased with (Madi Bushman),” her coach lauded, “coming out in only her second varsity meet on an unfamiliar course and posting the best round of the year.”

“I am hoping that we are starting to put things together at the right time and will be a stronger team heading into the last leg of the season,” Bartletti said.
