Robins put up incredible 26 runs, mercy win over Lakeland
space
Red Robin baseball has been playing out of its mind as of late at every level. Last Friday evening, the Antigo junior varsity squad shelled Ashland at home 10-1, thanks to explosive bats from Brian Cuevas Ruiz, Alex Nagel and Ben Jansen.

Jake Fleischman was first on the mound for the Robins, pitching three innings while striking out six batters allowing two hits and two walks. Nick Greening came in in the fourth, striking out one and allowing no hits.

Cuevas Ruiz relieved Greening, pitching the fifth and sixth innings. Allowing one run and walking six batters, Ruiz managed to garner two strikeouts in the home rout setting closer Arin VerHagen up for success.

VerHagen allowed two singles early in the seventh, but struck out one batter and allowed no runs for the victorious Robins.

Cuevas Ruiz also found himself the best hitter for Antigo on the day, going 3-4 with three singles. Nagel finished 2-3 with a single and a double, while Jansen was 2-2 with two singles and was walked twice.

 Lakeland trounced

If Antigo runs were like money, they’d be best to opening a savings account. One never knows when they might, if ever, score 26 runs in a single game again. Blowing out the Lakeland Thunderbirds at home 26-5 Monday evening, Coach Tom Weix and his team have much to applaud.

Alex Nagel was superb in his best start of the season, pitching four innings and striking out 10 Lakeland batters while giving up six walks. The sophomore pitched a no-hitter through his four inning performance.

Nick Greening closed out the fifth and final inning of the mercy-called game, allowing one hit but striking out two.

Antigo had 20 hits in the abridged game, led by Jake Husnick’s immaculate 5-5 batting exhibition, almost hitting for the cycle with three singles, a double and a home run. Jake Fleischman muscled the ball out of the park for two homers, a feat that even the stellar varsity has not mustered one of this year so far.

Ben Jansen was a perfect 1.000 on the day, 4-4 with four singles. Both Arin VerHagen and Max Nowinsky ended their drizzling afternoon batting 2-2 with two doubles each.

Averaging 18 runs per game in their last two outings, the JV Robins look forward to a doubleheader at home against Merrill to demonstrate its relentless offense one again.
