Lady Lakers kick off season at tourney
space
The White Lake softball team finally got its chance to kick off the 2014 season Saturday.

With snow-covered fields confining the squad to indoors over the past few weeks, the Lady Lakers traveled to Manawa where it took on both the host Wolves and the Marion Mustangs.

“The less than desirable weather has caused a slow start to the season and has prevented us from utilizing our field for practices,” Coach Ellie Kanke said. “We were excited for this tournament as we were finally able to get our feet dirty. Our main focus was to use these games as a learning opportunity.”

Manawa got the early advantage — and kept it — in White Lake’s first outing as the Lakers lost 18-0.

“We made a lot of mental errors that contributed to a number of unearned runs,” Kanke explained.

Game two proved better but White Lake still fell on the losing end, 11-1 to Marion.

“After reflecting on the first game, we were able to work out some of the kinks and show up strong for the second game. We improved immensely on defense and greatly reduced our error count,” Kanke said.

Junior pitcher Elizabeth Schultz collected 11 strike outs on the day — three versus Manawa and eight over Marion — while junior shortstop Megan Schewe excelled on defense, contributing five outs on the day.

“Seniors SamWickershiem and Cassey Deisinger served as excellent role models for the underclassmen as they possessed a positive, encouraging attitude throughout the tournament,” Kanke said.

Rounding out the varsity crew are seniors Julia Boyd and Angel Budd, sophomores Monica Marsh, Megan Maddix, Dani Kubacki and Dani Peters and freshmen Lindsey Shannon and Paige Clay. Janice Fronek serves as manager.

Field and weather conditions pending, White Lake is scheduled to compete at Crandon today.
