Local athletes, coaches to participate in All-Star game|
Some of the area’s best female basketball players have been invited to compete among the state’s elite in Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Association All Star Tournament.
Brittney Wald of Antigo, Makayla Raith of Elcho and Mikayla Hartman of Wittenberg-Birnamwood, along with three area coaches, will make the trip to Wisconsin Dells for competition inside the Just A Game Fieldhouse on Friday, June 20.
Joining them on the tour are coaches Michelle Kincaid of Elcho and Mike Balliett and Nick Mechelke of Wittenberg-Birnamwood.
In its 32nd year, the event serves as a fund-raiser for the Midwest Athletes Against Childhood Cancer, a non-profit, charitable organization formed to support research into the effective treatment and cure of childhood cancer.
All participants are asked to raise money for the cause and are asking the community for their support. The deadline for sponsorship is May 1.
More information on how to contribute, including various sponsorship levels, can be found online at www.wisbca.org. Sponsorship includes free tickets to the event.
All three of the area’s players are worthy selections.
Wald, a daughter of Jon and Rhonda Wald, just completed her senior year on the Antigo High School basketball team and will compete for the Division 2 North All-Stars.
“Normally I play for fun but this way I can do something for someone else,” the future Carroll University athlete said in marking her ability to help contribute to the cause.
Earning First Team All-Great Northern Conference honors during her junior and senior year, including a unanimous selection in 2014, the three-sport athlete was Antigo’s top scorer this past season, averaging 13.9 points per game in league play. She was the Robins’ leading shooter in three-pointers and second in rebounds. Wald also competed for the Central Wisconsin Elite AAU.
“I firmly believe that Brittney is very deserving of this honor,” high school coach Dennis Duchac said. “She has worked to hone her skills as a top notch basketball player. She has been an outstanding representative for the Antigo girl’s program, our school and our community during her basketball career.”
Ally Flannery and Heather Kessler were past Antigo representatives.
“Brittney is in very good company,” Duchac said.
Elcho All Stars
Raith and Coach Kincaid will both represent Elcho High School on the Division 5 North All Stars.
“I am very honored to have been selected to play,” Raith said, “but more importantly to help raise money to fight childhood cancer.”
A daughter of Ron and Kathy Raith, the senior earned All-Northern Lakes Conference mention all four years of her prep career including First Team honors as both a junior and senior. The Channel 12 Player of the Year at conclusion of the 2012-13 season, she broke a 30-year school scoring record as a senior, finishing with a total of 1,259 points and being one of only two Lady Hornets to pass the 1,000 point mark.
Kincaid has served as head coach of the Elcho program for the past 15 years and will join Marion’s Scott Bauman and Jeff Heiliger as coaches of the All-Star team. It is her third time to be selected for the position.
“I am honored to be selected to coach again this year and more importantly to help raise money for such a wonderful cause,” Kincaid said.
A 1984 Elcho High School grad, Kincaid was the Northern Lakes Conference’s Coach of the Year in 2011-12 and coached at the All-Star level in both 2005 and 2009.
One of only two seniors on the Wittenberg-Birnamwood roster this past season, Hartman will join coaches Balliett and Mechelke on the Division 3 North All Star team.
The Lady Charger was second in team scoring for the 2013-14 season, finishing with a total of 273 points for a 11.4 point per game average — fifth best in the Central Wisconsin-Eight. She was also her squad’s ace from the three-point line, sinking 31 on the season. Her accomplishments earned her mention on this season’s First Team All-Conference list.
The long-time head man for the Charger girls basketball program, Balliett will serve as head coach of the All Star team and be joined by fellow Charger Mechelke and Mike Kaczmarek of Oconto Falls.
“This is an opportunity that every coach hopes that they will get the chance to experience during their coaching career,” Balliett said, noting that he looks forward to being able to help the fight against childhood cancer.
The day will start with Division 4 action beginning at 9 a.m. followed by Division 5 play at 10:45 p.m. The Division 1 will start at 12:30 p.m. followed by Division 2 at 2:15 p.m. and Division 3 at 4 p.m.
