Antigo track team competes in relay meet at Eagle River

With Mother Nature playing havoc with the spring sports season, the Antigo High School boys track and field team made the trip north Tuesday to an impromptu indoor relay meet at Northland Pines.

The Robins finished fifth overall, beating out Mercer but following Ashland, Pines, Tomahawk and Hurley.

With an unrelenting winter looming over this spring, the hopes of outdoor activities in the Antigo spring athletic community seem daunting. Area coaches are more than eager to get outside and perform.

“This meet was put on last minute because of the snow this week,” Coach Darren Drewek said. “Hopefully, this will be the final splash of snow before our outdoor track meet on May 24.”

In the indoor relay meet, the final scores of sprint and distance events were combined in a communal team effort.

“This is the first relay meet Antigo has been to in possibly 20 years or more,” Drewek said. “It was something different and exciting because you can put distance and sprinting events in the same relay. The athletes enjoyed it.”

The Robins claimed victory in the boys’ distance medley with a final time of 12:01.19. The crew, Aeric Berner, Justin Hickman, Colin Koss and Cortland Tatro, defeated second place Ashland by 37 seconds.

The four also ran the 1600 sprint medley, placing second overall with a time of 4:06.90. Host Pines took first place with their team mark of 4:05.13.

The 4x400 meter relay team — Riland Baker, Jon Conklin, Nick Flores and Cody Labay — placed second with a time of 4:02.8. Pines was first at 3:55.85.

In the 55 meter hurdles relay, the combined times of Joe Wittmann, Chris Novak, and Andy Novak warranted the Robin men third place overall in the event. Wittmann had a final time of 9.51 seconds, placing fifth overall. C. Novak finished ninth at 11.36, while A. Novak placed 13 out of 18 at 11.61. First place in the finals went to Anthony Litersky of Ashland with a mark of 8.54 seconds.

The 4x100 relay team (Baker, Michael Bradley, John Monk, Jackson Smits) finished fourth as did the 200 meter hurdles team (Wittmann, Hohensee and C. Novak) and the 800 sprint medley (Baker, Bradley, Hohensee, Monk)

The 4x200 meter relay team (Baker, Hohensee, Cody LaBay and Monk) finished fifth.
