The Antigo Red Robins competed in its third indoor track and field meet of the year Monday and its first home outing. The Robins played host to four area teams in what proved to be a highly competitive meet.

The Antigo boys took first place overall with an impressive 106 points, finishing above Gresham-Bowler, Wittenberg-Birnamwood, Menominee Indian and Marion. The Lady Robins tallied 75 team points earning them second place, finishing behind 160-point powerhouse Witt-Birn but ahead of Marion, Gresham and Menominee .

Coach Darren Drewek was proud of the chance to host a successful Robin meet.

“It was a very fun meet that flowed smoothly. We don’t get home meets very often, so we always make the best out of the ones we do have,” he said.

For Antigo’s young men, the path to first place came in the form of Colin Koss, who took first in the 1600 meter run with a final time of 4:55.44, almost 10 seconds better than second place Cody Montez of Gresham-Bowler at 5:04.86.

Also taking first place honors for the boys was Aeric Berner in the 200 meter dash, finishing with a time of 26.77 seconds, beating Clay Detert of Marion at 27.01 and Austin Olson of Gresham-Bowler at 27.41.

The boys 4x351 meter, 12-lap relay was conquered by the Robins as well. Members of the first place team include Riland Baker, Kirk Prince, Jon Conklin and Dan Spaude. The young men finished with a time of 3:48.98, far ahead of second place Gresham-Bowler’s 4:05.40.

Also mentionable from the gentlemen’s side was Antigo’s 400 meter dash runners. Justin Hickman and Berner took second and third place with times of 1:00.73 and 1:01.26, respectively. Only Gresham-Bowler’s Drew Payne finished slightly better with his marginal victory time of 1:00.56.

Conklin placed second in the high jump with a final jump of 10 feet, finishing just behind Andrew Pleshek of Gresham-Bowler in points.

In the 45 meter dash, Berner, Hickman and Josh Karolus finished in stride, earning second, third and fourth place finishes with close times of 6:20, 6:23 and 6:48 seconds. Gordon James of Menominee finished first at the 5:94 mark.

As for the Lady Robins in the pole vault, the girls were superlative in the pole vault, leaving no other team room to place. Kari Kleinschmidt, Sami Smits and Kim Robertson, all of Antigo, took first through third with heights of seven, six and 5.5 feet respectively.

Kim Robertson ran her personal best time in the 45 meter hurdles with a final mark of 8.77 seconds, taking home second place in what most are describing as her best event. Witt-Birn’s Kendra Stolz finished first with a time of 8.61.

Senior Chelsea Payant competed in her first race of the year and finished the mile run with an impressive time of 6:11.57, earning her second place accolades. Mikayla King of Witt-Birn took first less than two seconds before Payant with a time of 6:10.11.

Antigo’s Sarah Duff took first place in the 400 meter dash with a time of 1:08.94 seconds. Erica White Eagle of Witt-Birn took second at 1:12.34 while Melody Reimer of Marion took third with her time of 1:20.53.

Duff and Mandy Petts made Antigonians proud, finishing first and second place in the 200 meter dash with neck-and-neck times of 30.68 and 30.93 seconds, beating out Witt-Birn’s Katie Norrbom who finished third at 31.63.

“Overall, (we) are off to a strong start,” said girl’s Coach Andrea Raley after the meet.

Coach Drewek was equally as encouraging. “One of the team goals was to win the invite and we did just that.”
