It was a tough winter, but now spring is here
space
Spring officially arrived in Antigo and Langlade County today, but it was not the harbinger of summer.

Temperatures were in the middle 20s this morning, but there were clouds and the forecast for the next several days includes lows at or near the zero mark.

It should be expected.

Climatologists analyze the winter season as three months, December through February and the experts agree that this is a season that not many will forget soon.

Dr. John Young and Dr. Edward Hopkins for the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration, said that below zero temperatures, extreme wind chills were common throughout the state.

In addition to that cold, frequent, fluffy snowfalls produced long periods of above normal coverage but the water content was reportedly only moderately above normal at the end of February.

The ice on the Great Lakes set a modern record with 90 percent coverage matched only a few times in the past century. Frost in areas without snow is deep, and has caused major problems maintaining municipal water service’s throughout the state.

The weather agency predicted that the month of March would be abnormally cool delaying agriculture, ice breakups and shipping on the Great Lakes.

Young and Hopkins are suggesting it will take some time to get the lakes unthawed and the frost out of the ground, which might raise the risks of spring floods.

Kim Smith snapped several stunning photos of some early spring birds during a stroll on the city’s boardwalk. The top photo shows a Cedar Waxwing looking for berries. The lower photo shows a robin scouting for food.
