Gymnasts will represent Antigo at state meet for 11th straight year

When discussing high school gymnastics, Antigo must be listed among the talking points.

Although not having advanced to the state team championships prior to the change of the new millenium, the Lady Robins have done it 11 straight years since, making it one of the most successful sports programs in local prep history.

“We came a long way this year,” said longtime coach Julie Langseth, who is assisted at the helm by fellow coach Stacy Bula.

Fielding a 2013-14 crew featuring only two seniors, zero juniors and a collection of underclassmen, Antigo has shown incredible growth over the past few months and in response, have been rewarded in yet another trip to Wisconsin Rapids starting Friday where it will compete among the state’s best.

“After 11 years, it almost becomes easy to forget how exciting this is, how important it is,” Langseth said, “but these girls have put in the time and have worked hard to get to where they are now.”

Katelyn Kondzela and Lindsay Berndt serve as the squad’s lone seniors and will bring both experience and poise to the competition, having participated at the state meet both in team action and as individuals.

The pair are first-time individual qualifiers in the all-around, having finished third and fourth respectively in the WIAA sectional meet held on Antigo’s home floor last week. In that meet, Kondzela won on balance beam, was second on vault and finished third on floor exercise. Berndt earned the runnerup spot on vault, finished third on floor and just missed advancement on the beam by tying for sixth place.

Two others — sophomores Tyler Tatro and Kari Kleinschmidt — also earned advancement as individuals. At sectionals, Tatro placed fourth on beam while Kleinschmidt was fourth on bars.

In a change from past years, the four will compete Saturday in their individual rotations with action beginning at 11 a.m.

Friday will belong to the teams. Along with Antigo’s four individual qualifiers, fellow members Alli McCann, Kim Swan, Alivia Weix and Kimi Robertson will represent the Red Robin squad in a run for a Division 2 title.

“I am very proud of all of them,” Langseth said.

Friday’s team events will begin at 2 p.m. Joining Antigo will be squads from Ashland, Mount Horeb, Platteville/Belmont/Lancaster, Rice Lake/Cumberland, River Falls, River Valley, Viroqua/Cashton/ Hillsboro/North Crawford, Waterford and Whitefish Bay.
