Lady Robins score regional win, will next play state-ranked New London|
Antigo High School seniors Brittney Wald and Steph Hanke made certain that their final game at home would go down in the win column.
Playing host to Shawano in the first round of the WIAA regional play-offs Tuesday, Wald scored 20 points while Hanke went a perfect 6-for-6 at the free throw line while garnering 10 rebounds as the Lady Robins claimed a 41-34 victory to advance to the next round.
“Moving on in the tournament was one of their goals,” Head Coach Dennis Duchac said, noting that it had been several seasons since the feat was accomplished.
“It was good to get the win, a good win for the seniors,” he added.
A three-pointer from beyond the arc by Wald — the first of her three on the night — and a field goal by Hanke served as Antigo’s lone points in the first quarter as the Robins entered the second period down 11-5.
Scoring a 9-6 advantage in the followup, Antigo cut the deficit to three, 17-14, by the break.
A shot by the Hawks’ Lindsey Kurtz opened the second half but minus a three-pointer by Morgan Klitzke, Shawano’s offense fell stagnant as Antigo went on a 16-5 run to enter the final stanza up 30-22.
A shot by Abi Warren gave Antigo its biggest lead of the game, 32-22, at the 7:09 mark in the fourth quarter.
Shawano cut the lead to 32-26 before Red Robin senior Tasha Voytovich sank two clutch free throws to return Antigo’s lead to eight with 3:11 remaining.
A Hawks’ two-pointer at the 2:44 mark again kept the game close and seconds later, a Shawano attempt from three-point range spun around the rim and bounced out to the groans of the opposing fans.
An injury time-out off a foul removed a Shawano player from the floor and subsequently sent Antigo’s Abi Warren to the line. Following suit, she sank both to put the Robins up 36-28.
Shawano’s Sara Hokenstad aced a three-pointer with 1:11 to go before Wald connected on two more attempts from the charity stripe to keep Antigo in the lead 38-31.
Finishing with eight points on the night, Hanke followed suit with two of her own before a 1-for-2 performance by Wald at the line pushed the Robins ahead 41-31 with 22.6 seconds left on the clock.
Hockenstad made good on a distance shot at the buzzer, leaving the Robins up 41-34.
Voytovich finished with five points for the Robins followed by Warren with four. Sarah Duff and Mandy Petts each chipped in two.
“Abi and Sarah stepped up. It was nice to see our younger kids do well,” Duchac said.
With round one in hand, Antigo (9-12) will advance to Friday’s regional semi-finals in a matchup versus No. 1 seed New London (17-4). The defending Bay Conference champions are ranked the No. 8 Division 2 team in the state.
“They are fast and will press us,” Duchac said. “We will need to slow it down, be efficient and take care of the ball.”
The Bulldogs will host the contest beginning at 7 p.m.
