Antigo Squirts rack up points at Spooner tourney
space
The Antigo Aces Squirt team participated in the Spooner Tournament this past weekend and in the consolation game. In what was a wild weekend of offense, the Aces left Spooner with many of their young players amassing amazing numbers of points.

Scoring 28 goals in three games, offense reigned supreme in the weekend tourney. The Squirts were unfortunately defeated in their first game on Saturday via a shootout 9-8 to Black River Falls. With Falls up by two goals at the end of the first period, three different Antigo players got the Aces on the board in the second.

With subsequent goals by Reese Myre, Trevin Walbeck and Mason Berg, Antigo went into the second intermission still trailing 4-3.

In a four-goal third period for Antigo, Myre had two consecutive goals while Garrett Husnick and Walbeck followed suit with one each. Black River Falls would score three times themselves, however, and the game went down to a shootout. Myre scored the only shootout goal for Antigo, but the Aces were snubbed by two Falls goal scorers for the loss.

Later in the afternoon, the Aces got their defense to step up as they beat McFarland 10-4. Despite being down 2-0 early in the first period, Antigo found a way to score goals quickly. Evening the score 2-2 at the end of the first period, the second period proved to be disastrous for McFarland as they gave up five goals to the Ace youth.

Impressively, Husnick and Myre both had hat tricks in the win. Landon Nelson contributed two goals himself, while also adding to the Antigo assault were Evelyn Leveque and Walbeck.

In Sunday afternoon’s consolation game, lessons learned from the two previous contests came to fruition with perfect displays of both offense and defense in a 10-0 victory over Somerset. The second period must be charmed for Antigo, for even though they led 1-0 at the end of the first period they exploded with six scores in the second.

Walbeck, one of the team’s top point scorers, came to life with a four goal showing on Sunday. All four goals were in a row and scored in the epic second period. Myre, whose weekend had been superb already, added another pair of goals against Somerset. Alanna Weix, Taylee Tucker, Calvin Jansen, and Nelson all added a goal apiece in the lopsided consolation rout.

On the weekend, Myre had eight goals and stepped up big for Antigo while Walbeck’s seven scores was close behind. Big time offense has been a particular characteristic of the Aces so far this year.
