Leading early in game, Antigo boys lose to Lakeland 58-57
space
The crowd at the Sheldon Fieldhouse was waiting with breathless anticipation when the score was 40-39 entering the fourth quarter Friday night. Minutes later, as time expired, not much deviance had occurred as the Antigo Red Robins were defeated by the Lakleand Thunderbirds 58-57. Only the crowd’s countenance had changed.

Coming off a loss to Medford one week ago, the Robins have had six days to recover thanks to a Tuesday night cancellation against Pacelli. The week’s rest proved not to be beneficial for Antigo as a second half stagnation caused their offense to sputter.

Coach Jesse Shaw was upset with the team’s game-time start. “We had a poor start and got down 12 in the first quarter,” he said, “But we stormed back in the second quarter and took a five point lead.”

The score at the end of the first half had Antigo leading 31-26. Blake Below had sunk three three-point baskets in the first half alone and Cassius Noskowiak added another.

Coming out in the second half with the five-point lead, Antigo’s third quarter saw an offensive deterioration. Scoring only eight points to the Thunderbirds’ 14, the third marked the Robins’ worst quarter of the evening.

Going into the fourth down by one, both teams scored 18 points to keep Lakeland’s lead alive to victory 58-57.

“We did not have a very good start to the third quarter which allowed Lakeland to grab the momentum,” Shaw commented. “We played more aggressively in the fourth quarter but could not make enough plays down the stretch.”

Cas. Noskowiak hit four three pointers in the Robins 18-point fourth quarter, finishing the evening with five shots from beyond the arch, two field goals and two free throws for 21 points.

Below ended his evening with four shots from long distance and three FGs for 18 points.

Jack Lund was consistent throughout the game with four baskets and three foul shots, finishing with 11 points. Cameron Noskowiak added four points for the Robins while Luke Osborne had one three point score.

The Robins five-game winning streak from Feb. 3 to 11 was snapped in a loss to Medford last week 58-41. Antigo has been outscored 116-98 in the past two losses, but has never been totally outmatched in either game. The boys’ improvement can definitely occur as the Robins’ have been capable of scoring major points this season.

Coach Shaw is looking forward. “We now turn our attention to New London.”

The Red Robins, now 13-6-0 overall and 6-5-0 in conference, begin their WIAA Sectional Playoffs this coming week. Antigo, the No. 4 seed, will take on the No. 5 New London Bulldogs Tuesday at home at 7 p.m.
