Antigo’s varsity bowlers are state-bound.

Thanks to an impressive performance at this past weekend’s District 9 Conference championships at Skipp’s Bowling Center in Stevens Point, both the Antigo boys and girls squad qualified for the state tourney slated to begin on Friday, Feb. 28.

Both teams will compete at Ashwaubenon Lanes for the first round of qualifications starting at 6:30 p.m. The top five squads in each division will advance to the second round on Saturday with the top three continuing to Sunday’s televised finals.

Under the guidance of Coach Bill McFarlane, Antigo’s ladies placed first in the Girls Division 2 bracket to earn a trip to the state tourney.

The boys, coached by Trevor McCarthy, also earned a spot by placing third in the Division 2 Co-ed bracket.

Bowling 15 baker games, switching lanes every game, the girls varsity team put in it best performance of the year posting a total pin fall of 2703 for a 180 per game average. Its high game was a 236.

Freshman Theresa Webb led the attack by finishing with an 85.7 percent fill rate — a feat made possible by scoring 12 strikes, 12 spares and only four open frames. Fellow freshman Allivia Zoern also put in a solid effort with 12 strikes, 10 spares and six opens. Senior Sarah Doucette had 14 strikes, nine spares and seven opens.

Rounding out the team are junior Rebecca Duchac, senior Rachel Rine and sophomore Hailey Robinson.

Iola-Scandinavia finished second in the team events with a 2459. Amherst was third at 2438. Both teams also advanced to state.

Antigo’s boys scored a 2945 to finish third overall behind Manawa (3044) and Wittenberg (2950). The Robins averaged a 196 and had a high game of 227.

Junior Nick Arrowood led the cause with 17 strikes, 12 spares and only one open for an impressive 96.6 percent fill rate.

Freshman Collin Schedlbauer had 20 strikes, six spares and four opens while junior James Gervais had 15 strikes, 11 spares and four opens. Rounding out the team are sophomores Ryan McCarthy and Logan Liebergen.
