Antigo gymnasts earn runnerup title at Whitefish Bay
space
With less than two-tenths of a point separating it from its closest competitor, the Antigo High School gymnastics team scored an honorable second place finish at Whitefish Bay Saturday.

Split between two brackets based on how teams have been scoring throughout the season, the Robins took runnerup status in the White Division, falling short to first place Waterford 131.1 to 127.125. Oshkosh was third at 126.95.

Host Whitefish Bay claimed the Red Division crown with a 144.5. Arrowhead was second at 142.85 followed by Homestead in third at 139.025.

“We had to opportunity to see some of the best teams in the state as well as a whole different set of judges,” Antigo Coach Julie Langseth said. “There were some great teams and great gymnasts.

“As a team we put together a great meet with minimal mistakes,” she added. “The success really depends on the total team, with each athlete doing their part and supporting each other. Because it was a 20 team meet, there are only four competitors per event and every score counts. In a traditional meet, there are five competitors and the lowest score per event in thrown out.”

Two of Antigo’s athletes finished within the top 15 in the all around— senior Lindsay Berndt in seventh with a combined score of 32.725 and senior Katelyn Kondzela, 11th with a 32.3. Waterford’s Sam Dziak claimed the title with a 34.6.

Berndt earned Antigo’s highest individual finish, taking fourth on the floor exercise with a score of 8.35. Kondzela placed seventh (8.275) followed by teammate Kim Swan in ninth (8.1) and Alli McCann, 20th (7.6).

Kondzela tied for seventh beam, scoring an 8.3. Berndt finished 13th (8.15) followed by Swan in 16th (8.0). Tyler Tatro finished 14th with a 7.4.

On vault, Kondzela came in eighth (8.575) followed by Berndt in 11th (8.425). Swan was 16th (8.35) followed by Kari Kleinschmidt, 27th at 7.95.

Berndt placed 10th on uneven parallel bars with a score of 7.8. Kleinschmidt stepped up for 13th (7.5) followed by Tatro, 18th (7.2) and Kondzela, 19th at 7.15.

In the powerful Red Division, Whitefish Bay’s Lily Hayes took the all around title with a 38.125.

Antigo will host the Great Northern Conference tournament on Saturday beginning at 11 a.m.
