Valentine’s Day weekend will bring something for everyone across the northwoods.

Moderating temperatures should allow for great fun at the Culver’s Trailblazer Sled Dog Races all weekend long, and on Sunday families are invited down to Peaceful Valley Park for an afternoon of Olympic-style events in a fabulous atmosphere.

There’s more too, including dining and entertainment, and even a chance to hunt up bargains at a couple sales.

A look at events, taken from the Antigo Daily Journal’s advertising columns, follows:

CULVER’S

CHALLENGE

Conditions for dogs and spectators alike are expected to be wintertime-ideal for the 2014 Culver’s Trailblazer Challenge taking place Saturday and Sunday on Antigo’s north side.

Hosted by the Antigo/Langlade County Chamber of Commerce, the racing will include competition in junior, adult and skijoring classes in 10-dog, six-dog and four-dog divisions.

The courses wind through the hills, fields and neighbors northeast of Antigo with excellent spectator viewing opportunities.

There is no admission charge and all races begin and end at Culver’s. Action starts at 10 a.m. Saturday and 9 a.m. on Sunday.

Due to the races, the Springbrook skiing and walking trail will be closed on Saturday and Sunday.

WINTER FUN DAY

With a special nod to the Olympics underway in Sochi, Russia, Antigo will hold a Winter Fun and Wellness Day on Sunday, 3 to 6 p.m., at Peaceful Valley Park.

The event is sponsored by the city of Antigo in conjunction with Cornerstone Chiropractic & Wellness, Langlade Occupational Health, the Boys & Girls Club of Langlade County, Lakeside Pharmacy & Grocery and the Kiwanis Club.

All activities, events and food are free. The fun will include big bat baseball and kickball, ice shuffleboard, a sculpture contest, turkey bowling, snow angel and snow painting competition. Brandt’s Sleigh Rides will also be on the grounds.

There will be a bonfire blazing, perfect for roasting marshmallows, along with a healthy food menu created by Langlade Hospital. Drinks will include hot chocolate, cider and coffee.

The first 75 youths at the event will receive a free prize, There will also be a drawing for gold, silver and bronze baskets filled with local goods and coupons.

VALENTINE’S DINING,

ENTERTAINMENT

The Edison Club Event Center is hosting its Valentine’s Day dinner on Saturday, serving a full menu from 4 to 8 p.m., including prime rib, steak, shrimp, broasted-styled chicken and a loaded salad bar. After dinner, enjoy music with Jamie Campbell and the Redneck Romeos. Music starts at 9 p.m. Unless you’re dining, there is a $5 cover charge.

There will be sweetheart specials all weekend long at Swartzendruber’s Supper Club. On Friday, try the fish fry or seafood buffet. Weekend specials include surf ‘n’ turf for two, prime rib, steak, chicken and pasta selections, and a seafood lover’s trio. Top it off with special sweetheart desserts.

Miller’s Nutshell Supper Club in Phlox will be serving prime rib and porterhouse in addition to its Friday fish fry tonight.

Heartbreakers on Antigo south side will be serving specials on Saturday, including steak and seafood, prime rib and tenderloin gorgonzola. Stop by tonight for the regular fish fry.

Koni K’s Korner Pub in Elcho will have a karaoke party with Curt and Shannon on Saturday starting at 9 p.m. Get 10 percent off your meal from Koni K’s Family Restaurant.

Two Angel’s Family Restaurant will serve up some great dining tonight. The special will feature an eight-ounce rib-eye steak with shrimp along with potato, vegetables and soup or salad.

Fifth Avenue Restaurant and lounge plans a full menu of specials tonight, including lobster bisque in a bread bowl served all day. In the evening, choose from Gus’ famous Seafood Ourada, featuring shrimp, scallops and crab in a four-cheese cream sauce, tenderloin Oscar with crab meat, asparagus and Hollandaise sauce along with the regular fish fry. Dessert deals include blackberry truffle and chocolate molten lava cake with raspberry sauce.

Happy Valentine’s Day from Melody Mill in Aniwa. The restaurant will be serving its regular menu including fish frys and prime rib.

Vickie and the Vets will open at 4:30 p.m. with a great menu. Choose from king or queen cut prime rib, parmesan scallop linguini, or tenderloin and shrimp. Reservations are recommended.

Plan the perfect Valentine’s Day at RubyMay’s Cafe in Summit Lake. Treat that special someone to the restaurant’s once-a-month Friday evening fish fry, with serving from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.

MORE MUSIC

Big Mouth and the Power Tool Horns will be playing tonight and Saturday at The Groove, located in North Star Mohican Casino Resort. The show starts at 8 p.m. both nights.

Acclaimed Singer-songwriter Bill Staines will perform Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. at the Edison Club Event Center. The concert is presented by Antigo Community Theater.

MORE DINING

The Elcho United Church of Christ Men’s Club will serve a fish fry beginning at 4 p.m. at the Jack LaMar Pavilion located behind the church. Enjoy fried or broiled fish, potato, cole slaw, beverage and dessert.

The Knights of Columbus will host a chicken dinner on Sunday, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., at the hall on Center Street.

Come down to the Antigo Elks Lodge on Monday. Enjoy all-you-can-eat spaghetti with meat sauce, salad, hot garlic bread, ice cream, coffee and milk.

THEATER

Now showing at the Palace Twin Theater are “Lone Survivor,” rated R, and “Lego Movie,” rated PG.

Screenings are Sundays through Thursdays at 5:30 and 7:30 p.m.; Fridays and Saturdays at 7 and 9 p.m.; and Saturday and Sunday afternoons at 1:30 p.m.

SPORTS

Rick’s 45 Roadhouse will host a vintage snowmobile show Saturday. Registration starts at noon with the show from 2 to 4 p.m. There will be competition in five classes.

The Antigo Area Youth Hockey Association, in collaboration with the city of Antigo Parks and Recreation Department, is sponsoring free open skating at the Langlade County multi-purpose rink at the fairgrounds. There’s no charge with the donation of a non-perishable canned good. The schedule includes Friday, Feb. 21, noon to 1:30 p.m.

Mountain Bat Bar in Eland will hold a coyote hunt on Saturday with 100 percent payback. There will be beer and food at 5 p.m. Call 715 253-2514 for details.

SALES

North Central Sales Auctions will hold its annual Valentine’s Sweetheart Auction on Saturday beginning at 10:30 a.m. at North Winds Banquet Hall in Marion. Firearms, sporting goods, coins, furniture, primitives, antiques, collectibles and rare items will all be available.

An indoor estate sale will be held Saturday and Sunday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., at 232 Freiburger Ave. Everything must go, including a washer, dryer, recliner, kitchenware, Christmas decor and more.

OTHER EVENTS

The Langlade County Historical Society Museum and AVA Gallery are currently operating on winter hours. Visitors are welcomed Thursdays through Saturdays, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

“Making Magic” is on view through April 6 at the Woodson Art Museum in Wausau. There is no admission charge. The museum is open daily except Mondays.
