An Antigo man linked to a drug investigation involving the sale of massive quantities of both cocaine and marijuana has entered into a plea agreement with federal authorities.

John M. Hunter, 35, entered a plea of guilt Friday to a charge of conspiracy to contribute controlled substances during a hearing in the United States District Court in Green Bay.

He had been scheduled to take his case to trial next week. Instead, he will now wait until April 28 before learning his punishment for the crime. The offense carries a prison term between five and 40 years, up to $5 million in fines and four years to life of supervised release.

The spring hearing will bring an end to a case which drew statewide attention after Langlade County sheriff’s officials began investigation into reports that Hunter had been involved in the sale of illegal drugs. Several Antigo area residents, including an assortment of educators, were eventually named, and convicted, in connection with the case.

Hunter was originally charged locally with 50 felony drug-related counts. Those were later dismissed after he was indicted by a federal grand jury of the conspiracy count.

Hunter was charged with conspiring with others to distribute and possess 500 grams of cocaine, which figures to a little over one pound and 50 kilograms of marijuana — slightly over 109 pounds.

Officials said the acts occurred between May of 2009 and August of 2011.
