Second quarter run pushes Hodags past Lady Robins 57-40
space
Foul trouble proved deadly for Antigo’s Lady Red Robins Friday.

With starters and leading scorers Brittney Wald and Steph Hanke forced to sit the bench through much of the second quarter, host Rhinelander bounced back from an early 16-7 deficit to outscore its guests 23-9 before the break en route to claiming a 57-40 in a Great Northern Lakes Conference clash.

To put it simply, the loss was a definite disappointment for the Robin faithful.

“We came out really well, had lots of energy and a lot of momentum,” Antigo Coach Dennis Duchac said, “but we just then fell apart.”

Down 30-25 at the half, the Robins matched Rhinelander nearly shot for shot in the third, 10-9, but were outscored 17-6 in the fourth, resulting in its loss.

“We had it down to two points in the third quarter but we just couldn’t get over the hump,” Duchac said.

In their last meeting on Dec. 17, Antigo won 48-31.

The victory improved the Hodags to 6-8 on the season including 4-2 in league play. The Robins dropped to 6-8, 3-4 in the GNC.

Limited to only four points in the first half, Wald finished with 13 on the night to lead the Robins offense which was sketchy at best. Putting up 40 shots from the field, Antigo made only 15 for 37 percent.

In comparison, Rhinelander made more than half the attempts it put up, 19-for-35, for 54 percent, on the lead of double-digit scorers Kylie Hunter (21) and Sydnei Smith (18).

Seventeen of the Hodags’ points came on the free throw line including eight in the fourth quarter.

Antigo shot 8-for-9 from the stripe — seven by Hanke who finished with nine points on the night.

Mandy Petts fired in seven, including a three-pointer in the first quarter of play. Chelsea Payant finished with six points followed by Tasha Voytovich with three and Mikayla Nelson, two.

Hanke led the team in rebounds with eight of the squad’s 16 boards.

Antigo will travel to Wittenberg-Birnamwood (12-2, 8-1) Monday for a non-league meeting with the current leaders in the Central Wisconsin-Eight. Varsity game time is 7:30 p.m.
