Red Robin boys open Hockey Days with shutout vs. Jaguars|
A night of amazing saves on both sides of the ice turned out victorious for the Antigo Red Robins Friday. In an exciting kickoff to the flurry of events for Antigo Hockey Days this weekend, the boy’s hockey team defeated the Ashwaubenon Jaguars 1-0. The latest in Antigo’s five-game winning streak, the Robins battled against the Jaguars of the Fox River Classic Conference with excellent penalty killing and blocked shots.
Head coach Matt Borneman was very pleased with his team’s performance, a Robin victory that garnered the boys a second consecutive shutout amidst an enthusiastic multi-purpose building crowd.
“I had complete confidence in our guys,” Borneman said. “They came out good, our rotation was where it needed to be and just kept (Ashwaubenon) from getting good scoring opportunities.”
Ryan Schmidt accounted for 21 saves in the Robin’s shutout victory, opposite Ryan Wischow for Ashwaubenon who allowed one goal on the Robin’s impressive 32 shots on goal. The Jaguars played tough in the neutral zone, but by the third period the Robins had found ways of getting multiple shots on the busy Wischow.
Joe Kubacki scored Antigo’s lone goal on the power play 11:47 into the second period with assists set up by forward Alex Nagel and defenseman Jackson Charlesworth. It would prove to be the difference making goal of the contest as defensive play dominated the third period.
The most impressive element of Antigo’s game came close to seven minutes into the third, when two back-to-back Robin penalties 28 seconds apart gave the Jaguars a five-on-three advantage.
With Charlesworth and Matt Wolter, two of Antigo’s seasoned defensemen, in the box, the Jaguars released a barrage of shots from just inside the Antigo blue line over the course of the 1:32 two-man advantage.
The Robins penalty kill, led by Kubacki and Jed Weix, blocked every Ashwaubenon attempt, clearing the puck multiple times to kill off the threatening five-on-three and see their one-goal lead through to victory.
“The blocked shots are Red Robin hockey,” Coach Borneman said after the game. “We teach it, we learn it. Our five-on-three has been big for us a few times this year already and I couldn’t be happier.” The non-conference win over the Jaguars, now 5-3-1, brings the eighth-ranked Antigo Red Robins to 8-1-0. The Robins play the Waupaca Comets, 6-3-0, to begin a two-game home stretch Tuesday at 7pm.
