Castan Schisel, infant who tugged at hearts, dies

Little Castan Schisel, who lived and was loved more in his eight months than many people decades older, died Wednesday evening at Children’s Hospital in Milwaukee.

The infant son of Ron and Marlena Schisel of Antigo was born May 21, 2013 suffering from staggering heart defects.

But although he never managed to come home to Antigo, the community embraced him as its own. They followed his story through social media and the pages of the Antigo Journal, and hundreds of people raised thousands of dollars for him at a benefit in his name at his parents’ establishment, Smitty’s Bar & Grill, in August.

The benefit struck a true chord with the people of the Antigo area. Once doors opened, the place was busy with the day far exceeding expectations. A large M&M toy, filled with the candies, was auctioned off for at least $500 and a number of other donated items brought thousands of dollars.

Smitty’s simply wasn’t big enough to hold the expected crowd, so tents were set up in a parking lot behind the tavern. Even that area was packed.

People wanted to offer their help. A basket raffle ran out of tickets during the early evening, suggesting the size of the crowd and their willingness to participate.

Castan was born with hypoplastic left heart syndrome, better known as HLHS, and it was quickly determined by Milwaukee physicians the only way to fix it is with a different heart.

HLHS means that the heart does not form normally. The problem is that the left side of the heart cannot pump oxygen-rich blood to the body, creating very serious situation.

The diagnosis was made before Castan’s birth, and knowing that trouble loomed, he was born in Children’s Hospital in Milwaukee and received world-class care awaiting a donor heart. He underwent several surgeries, which occur in stages, and continued to fight until the very end.

But in recent weeks, his little body began to fail, and it was obvious that the fight was nearing an end.

Castan’s rare heart condition affects about 960 babies in the United States each year.
