Red Robin boys face toughest opponent to date, fall 97-80
space
The road to — and from — Chippewa Falls was a long one for the Antigo High School boys basketball team Tuesday, especially when it was forced to settle for a 97-80 loss.

“We held them to under 100 points, which was one of our goals tonight,” Robin coach Jesse Shaw said, “but we could not adapt to their style of ‘all-out press every possession’. We committed 40 turnovers and when we didn’t commit a turnover, we couldn’t finish lay-ups on the offensive end.”

Sitting at 0-4 in the Big Rivers Conference and 4-9 overall, the Cardinals certainly weren’t shy in putting up the shots. There were 81 in all from the field from the Cardinals alone, including 52 from three point range — and with even less than half of them making it through the basket, that performance is a difficult one to beat.

“It was a very tough game to play and coach,” Shaw said. “They dictated the tempo and there was no slowing it down.”

Hot from the start, Chippewa opened the first period with a 23-15 lead and in the second, out-shot Antigo 29-20 to go into the break up 52-35.

The margin proved to be a gap too difficult to bridge.

Holding steady, the Robins matched the Cardinals nearly point-for-point in the third quarter, 25-23, and in the fourth got the 22-20 edge — but by then it was too late.

“We fought hard to the end and never gave up, which is a credit to our team,” Shaw said.

On the lead of Nate Kalien — 27 points including five from three-point range — Chippewa shot 41 percent from the field (34-for-81) and were 16-for-25 from the line.

Antigo beat them percentage wise, but put up less shots, 25-for-55 (45 percent), to give the Cardinals the edge. At the stripe, the Robins tossed up 30 and made 24 including a perfect 12-for-12 performance by Blake Below.

Cassius Noskowiak as the Robins’ top scorer with 21 followed by Jack Lund with 17 and Below with 12. Cameron Noskowiak added eight.

With half the season to go, the loss dropped Antigo to 8-3 overall. Sitting at 3-2 in the Great Northern Conference, the squad will return to league play Friday at Tomahawk (0-5).
