Road trip pays off for Edge girls with 6-1 win|
For the Northern Edge girls hockey team, 2014 has been a bit tumultuous. Coming off a pair of losses and a tie, the Antigo/Rhinelander/Three Lakes squad put the Hatchets away with a 6-1 win Monday in Tomahawk.
Tomahawk may have scored first with Erika Vallier’s goal four minutes in. Bumping up to a 2-1 Edge advantage, Lauren Smith and Katie Detert found the back of the net with the assistance of Rachel Blomdahl and Lindsey Steger.
“Rachel had a very productive game. She recorded an assist on the night and she had and created many solid scoring chances for the team,” Antigo coach Corie Bottemiller said.
In the second period, Steger notched her first goal of the game at 5:12 being assisted by Smith and Grace Hoger. At 8:43, Smith scored an unassisted goal to give the Edge a 4-1 margin after two periods.
In the third period, Star Fermanich lit the lamp at 1:43 assisted by Emily Arno. Detert rounded out the scoring at the eight minute mark assisted by Steger to end the game with a 6-1 win.
Goalie Shea Peterson tallied 12 saves in the game while the Edge fired 41 total pucks at Erin Sparks for Tomahawk.
“We played a great game tonight from top to bottom with excellent efforts by girls who don't normally have a chance to play that often,” Bottemiller added. “Star Fermanich had a great game getting her first varsity goal.”
The Northern Edge 9-6-2 (6-1-1 GNC) will travel east for a conference game against Medford Friday before coming home to Antigo Saturday for Antigo Hockey Days. The puck drops at 7 and 3 p.m. respectively.
