Bulldog wrestlers show improvement at Tomahawk
space
The Antigo Middle School wrestling team had its first competition since their winter vacation, on Jan. 4, competing in a tournament in Tomahawk.

The wrestlers all showed improvement, even though win/loss records may not look that way. According to coaches Bovre and Harger, it was nice to see moves being used that we have been practicing and to have wrestlers listening to coaching before, during, and after the matches.

A lineup of 16 made the trip with four earning a second place finish.

Jayden Schoeneck, Neil Bretl, Conner Vandeweerd, and Hunter Brown all completed the day with 2-1 records, each taking second place in their respective weight class.

Schoeneck, Vandeweerd and Brown each had two pins while Bretl had one. Bretl’s one loss was decided by one point as he came back from a four point deficit with an escape and a takedown, only to lose 3-4.

“It was a hard fought match and Neil never gave up, almost coming out victorious,” the coaches noted.

Brandon Lucht, Will Balis, Korbin Krueger, Nick Roller, Sean Lock, and Jared Schell, and Royce Bauer all placed third.

Balis and Bauer each had a pin. Lucht’s two losses were close matches where in his second match, he gave up five points in the first period, getting taken down and giving up back points. Those were the only points Lucht gave up for the rest of the match, but scored three himself, ultimately suffering a 3-5 loss.

His third match was another two point loss that could have gone either way, but the referee called it as a loss.

Krueger’s last match came down to the last second. Appearing to have earned back points, unfortunately they were not rewarded, giving him the one point loss.

Dylan Dykstra, Nathan Dykstra, Brian Hitz, Kaz Bessert, and Dominic Smith all wrestled some very tough competition and ended in fourth place.

“All five showed improvements, ranging from better stances to hustling and putting wrestling moves together,” the coaches noted. “Dylan’s first match was a one point loss given up in the third period. The more experience these wrestlers get, they better they become and the more exciting their matches are.”
